It seems fairly redundant now at this stage; if you've got the internet or a TV you'll have heard just how good Breaking Bad actually is. But one more thread won't hurt.
I can't speak for the US, but in my circles here it became a sort of word of mouth TV phenomenon, a water-cooler style "oh, have you SEEN this show?" type deal that, when you consider that it was never even aired on British TV, is really quite remarkable. It says a lot about the increasing popularity of Netflix over here, the only way to watch it legally, that Breaking Bad got SO big with so little mainstream support.
Personally speaking, Breaking Bad was one of those oh-so rare shows where I could sit and watch episode after episode. "Box Set Culture", where you sit and watch entire seasons in one go, has never appealed to me. I usually get itchy and bored after two episodes, regardless of how good a show is, but Breaking Bad, along with Dexter and the Soprano's, was one of those shows where continuous, "Must See What Happens Next" viewing seemed like the only way to go.
So, Breaking Bad. Shocking, exciting, constantly funny and with a whole cast of great, believable, relatable characters, a modern TV classic seems like something of an understatement. If you've seen it, you'll agree, if you've NOT seen it.. dude, get to work.

I'm working on it. I've been meaning to start it any day now for months, but being so far behind is daunting and now Dexter is back up on Netflix too so I can't decide.

Well it's finished so you can't get any further behind. I know what you mean about the daunting process of starting a whole new series, but this one really is SO worth it.
