So far I've been regaling you all with modern hits from pretty ladies as though that were itself the definition of pop music. It's about time i got old school on you with a group of gentlemen who just don;t fit into the musical category they are lumped into.
If there is one style of music I almost unadulteratingly hate it's disco. There are a couple songs floating around on my iPod, but it's pretty much by accident. Blondie, KISS, Rod Stewart; all excellent artists who made terrible music trying to cash in on this soulless product of 70's culture. It was the equivalent of pop country today, except with more sex and drugs.
The other day I was watching Black Mirror -as every worthwhile person should- and who should the topic of discussion amongst the leads be but these guys:
The Bee Gees. "But you hate disco" (paraphrasing) says the wife; but everybody loves the Bee Gees unless they are just trying to be disagreeable. I suppose songs like How Deep is Your Love are pretty lame when you look at them from the standpoint of our indie scenes and punk attitudes and whatnot, but on the other hand fuck you. The brothers Gibb produced some of the most unique music in an era where so much sounded the same. And easy listening doesn't get any easier than this:

So yeah, this is one of the definitive love songs of its era or any other.
If this isn't the ultimate chorus for the "us against the world" couple, I don't know what is. Love so strong it defies all other ties and forsakes all else. Two people who need nothing in the goddamn world except each other. Call it cheeseball if you must, but this song captures something all of us aspire to be a part of, whether we want to admit it or not. So how about it? How deep is your love for this classic among classics?

Cause were living in a world of fools
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
Breaking us down
When they all should let us be
We belong to you and me
