A year or so ago I heartily recommended a TV show called "Angry Boys", a mockumentary style comedy show focused on a variety of different characters, all played by comedian Chris Lilley. It attracted a ton of controversy, most notably terrible, novelty rapper S-Mouse, (a blacked up Chris Lilley calling genuine black people "nigger" - can't think why that caused bad feeling). It was what all great comedy should be; smart, relatable, believable and not afraid to push boundaries. His latest series came out a few months ago in the UK, and should make it's way to the US soon (hopefully not without the picketing and protests Angry Boys attracted). "Ja'mie: Private School Girl" is based on Lilley's most famous creation; an un-nervingly convincing, pitch perfect portrayal of a spoiled, self-absorbed teenage girl, all selfie-photo taking, idiotic buzz word spouting ("I'm so random, but YOLO") nightmare. She takes part in her own charity campaigns ("the poor, the homeless, the black") and her main enemies are lesbians, fat people and Asians. She's everything that's wrong with the modern world, basically. Lilley's performance as Ja'mie is frighteningly accurate, all coy glances at the camera and flicking the hair from his, er, her eyes.. it's flawless. But what's most surprising is the attention to detail with the mockumntary formula itself. A direct parody of the mindless reality slop found on MTV, all loud horrible pop music and cheesy voice-overs. He's obviously spent hours watching Kardashian/Cribs style reality shit. This is a man who has suffered for his art. Take a look; www.youtube.com/watch?v=pniDfPCab8QKeep an eye on this one, folks.

So these are all actors? Or he's Borat-ing it? I wouldn't think anyone could take him (?) seriously as a girl, but then I still can't believe Sacha Baron Cohen convinced everyday Americans he was from Kazakhstan.

All actors, it's just made to look like a documentary. If you've never seen any of Chris Lilley's TV shows before (Summer Heights High, We Can Be Heroes and Angry Boys) I urge you all to rectify that. Guy is awesome.
As for Sacha, the grains of doubt only began to form in my mind during Bruno. Borat, I believe, caught everyone off guard because he was just so damn good at it. By the time Bruno came around I think more people were in on the gag.

Of the three shows you mentioned, which is most worthy of my time? You're right about Bruno, too. There were some scenes I felt were pretty clearly staged.

Angry Boys, for sure. It's got recurring characters from earlier shows but you don't really need to see them for this to work. For a cast of characters including middle aged Japanese woman all played by the same guy, and throwing expletives and racial slurs and a plethora of penis shaped merchandise, it's unbelievably moving at the end. This trailer is stupidly long, but it'll certainly give you an idea. Basically, if it's by Chris Lilley, it's worth your attention. youtu.be/iXo81hWhfQ0
