It was The Curmudgeon's birthday last week, and one of my gifts from Mrs C was the two disc version of the Manic Street Preachers latest album, Rewind the Film. People take the Manic's for granted these days. That they've been around forever, they release new material, they tour..sad and frustrating that a gold standard band like the Manic's can be swept away from the public eye because they're not twenty and don't play fucking dubstep. Of the people who DO still pay attention though, a growing number see this Manic's record as a sell-out, a radio friendly, soft album with none of the fire or fury of albums like the Holy Bible. They seem to be missing the point, and this video I'm about to show pokes fun at the image of the Manic's as aged, nostalgia pub rockers coasting on former glories. Yes it's a commercial sound, yes it's not some angry stab at governments or racism, but sometimes it doesn't need to be. The Manic's are still a band that can surprise us, when they could easily roll out their hits and nothing more to a demanding crowd (Rolling Stones, for example) but they continue to change, evolve, challenge and, in this case, delight. Judge for yourselves. youtu.be/J9L-jyFEsK4
