So Arcade Fire. We like those guys, yeah? Amid the Coachella festival's disembracement of traditional instrument-based music in favor of cheaper and easier DJ's for musical entertainment, Arcade Fire used a few seconds of their set to "Shout-out to all the bands still playing actual instruments at this festival". What a hate-filled rant, right? Well, somebody got their widdle panties in a twist on Twitter. For the record, he just spent nearly an hour whining on Twitter, which is more than a minute wasted on Arcade Fire. And accusing alternative rock of being for hipsters before unnecessarily and repeatedly mentioning how into opera you are? Did that just happpen? And I don't think that's the proper use of the word "cespool" (sic). Do I even score, bro? DO YOU EVEN ENGLISH, MOTHERFUCKER? God fucking damn it, this isn't how you advertise how great EDM artists are. I've come around to appreciating some of the stuff, but the fact remains that it takes more skill, talent, and emotion to play live in time with a full band than it does to layer some tracks on a computer program and press play. Nobody said you can't create great sounding music that way, but it's not the apex of musical expression either and should never take over the scene.

I'm not a fan of his music, but I'm usually on the side of Deadmau5 when he's had his online feuds in the past (and he does like to mouth off online a LOT). This time, though? He sounds like an idiot.
I shared this on Facebook as me (BIG Arcade Fire fan) vs Mrs C (BIG Deadmau5 fan) and while she didn't share Win Butler's dismissal of EDM at festivals, I don't think even she could argue that Deadmau5 didn't sound like THE biggest pretentious douchebag on the planet. A live orchestra? Do shut up, you cock.
It's a tricky one, though, because I've seen a few dance acts live at festivals and things and I just don't get it. Watching a guy behind a fucking booth? What's the point? You can stick all your fancy laser and light shows up your fucking ass, I want to see a band PLAY and interact with the crowd. I honestly do not see the appeal of a "live" dance show. Bands like the Prodigy that fuse both are great, but watching Deadmau5 live was the most boring experience of my life, yet the crowd seemed to love it. Not for me, though, and Arcade Fire win this argument without even uttering a word of comeback.

I disagree that he dismissed EDM. All he did was shout out to the other bands. That's it. If DeadMau5 played the Warped Tour and shouted out to all the DJ's out there, I doubt that Johnny Rotten and Billie Joe Armstrong would spend an hour crying about it on the internet. Giving a shout out is not a diss; it's just a little extra love for where you come from. Dave Grohl actually had the same problem with insecure electronica fans and I thought he'd already taken care of this. www.mtv.com/news/1679498/foo-fighters-dave-grohl-grammy_speech-edm-electronic-dance-music/It's fucking important to keep awareness of the old school way of doing things. Rock music is under siege in popular culture and the "human element" of it is being minimized in favor of simply copy-pasting, programming, and editing sounds on laptop computers and iPhone apps because it's cheap and easy. There is plenty of room for both approaches and some really great music can be created electronically, but right now EDM is pushing out "real" music and it's only natural that musicians are going to push back a little bit. No disrespect to the hardcore DJ's, but spamming EDM everywhere all the time is not pushing artistic musical expression forward in any way. It's just making everything sound the same.
