So I went to see Dawn of the Planet of the Apes last week. Great film, really enjoyed it.. but where do they go from here? (I'm about to talk about the movie now, if you haven't seen it, look away)
It's easily one of the better remake franchises, if not THE best, and did anyone get a weird sort of 9/11 conspiracy theory watching it? The staged, inside job atrocity that led to war, the image of the evil dictator standing over the American flag.. not to mention the whole dispute was over power (oil?) Maybe I was looking too much into it, but it's the first thing I thought of.
Anyway, the series is a trilogy, and the obvious (and Wikipedia confirms it) route to go is the rocket seen in the background comes back to earth. Y'know, the original movie. And the new movie is tentatively called "The Planet of the Apes."
How do they do this? A straight remake just would not work now, because the sting of the twist ending is obviously gone. But then wouldn't completely changing the story anger fans of the original?
What do you think?

Rocket ship in the background? I didn't catch that. From Rise or Dawn?
I figured the obvious route to go was to have the apes fight it out with the last surviving humans for an hour and a half. That supposed military convoy was on its way at the end of the film and Caesar seemed resigned to going to war.
Reeves has said there won't be a major time jump, and we know humanity isn't wiped out yet, so I don't see how a remake of the original could fit the story at all.

Skipped the post because I haven't watch the movie yet, but I'm assuming it will involve some maniacs blowing it up and being damned to hell. Unless, of course, that's how this one ended.

In the first movie, there's a TV on in the background (it focusses on it briefly) that I only noticed on the second watch (and had to Google the name of the ship to make sure). Here's a list of some references to the original movies from Rise.. herocomplex.latimes.com/movies/rise-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-21-nods-to-classic-apes/I think it will have to be a major new story, but I can imagine it being the ship landing back on earth with the apes having fully taken over. I think Caesar will be long gone, but will probably be considered some kind of sacred figure.

Caesar is the integral character in the reboot. There's no way they'll have a movie without him. I'd be surprised if the third film focuses on the spaceship returning to Earth. The reboot has taken great pains to be its own entity instead of copying everything from the 70s films. I could definitely envision the film ending with the spaceship returning, though, to bring it full circle back to the original film.

Ahh, that would make sense. I could see that happening. I actually talked to a girl last week who'd never seen any POTA movies. Never heard of it other than cinema posters etc. I wonder how many references in other TV shows etc just soared over her head? But yeah, didn't know about the original movie and "you maniacs" etc etc. Never heard of Psycho either. Just..how does that happen?

I wonder the same thing myself. I worked a summer job where I had underlings (which was every bit as awesome as it sounds), and most of them were only 2-3 years younger than me, but not a single one knew who Chris Farley was. Come to think of it, there were some POTA virgins in that group too. It's a sad life for some people, man.
