I'm beginning to feel a bit out of the loop with Arrow. I keep being told how amazing it is now and that I walked away too early. I started recording the Flash show but I'm not even sure I need to have seen Arrow first.

Arrow is pretty damn cool so long as you aren't a comic purist, but "amazing" might be pushing it too far. I stil feel they focus too much on family drama and not enough on Ollie being Ollie. He's so straight-faced and angsty all the time. I prefer snarkier versions of the character. You definitely do not need to watch Arrow to get into the Flash. It helps set up the origin a little if you saw him in the last season of Arrow, but it's far from necessary. And it's arguably better than Arrow if for no other reason than it features metahumans. Weather Wizard and even Captain Cold were pretty badass. Well, Cold's not a metahuman, but still. I can't fucking wait for Mirror Master.
