 So yeah, hot Australian white girl raps. Whatever. But I can't help but notice that pretty much every time I'm looking at internet news (not to be confused with real world news, which I avoid like the plague) I see homegirl taking some shit. I don't even know anything about her music other than that insane video where she and Jennifer Lopez are desperately rubbing their asses together, but I know she takes a lot of shit. First, Snoop Dogg tweets this photo:  add she responds pretty nicely considering:  and then she got relentlessly mocked online for a lukewarm freestyle she busted on some morning show that really wasn't that bad. I've seen a fuck of a lot worse from massive rappers like Lil' Wayne. Plus there's the ongoing feud with Azealia Banks, who has some serious racial issues she needs to work out in addition to some jealousy. This shit got so ridiculous that the rap community at large had to come to her defense. So now I'm reading that in an interview, when asked about what she'd like her legacy to be, she responded that "at the very worst, if I have a short-lived career, at least I could say I sparked a change--that I inspired some leniency in what people accept in hip-hop". Keep in mind, this is what she'd like to happen. The illiterate masses somehow managed to turn that into a declaration that she single-handedly changed hip-hop and now that's the big thing. Again, I don't give a shit about this girl's music and there's hotter and more talented girls out there out there, but I've got to admit that she's taking an awful lot of shit without really doing anything wrong. She's even been mocked on South Park for the size of her ass of all things. Kanye West was a moron for years before South Park took him on.  I don't get it. Girl handles herself better than almost any other rapper out there, I don't find her obnoxious or ignorant, she's sexy, she's not without talent; where's all the hate come from? Is it just pushback against the concept of a white woman in a black man's world? You tell me. |

I can't say I know much about Iggy. I can't stand her music, and I've seen a few blurbs about other rappers claiming she's "fake" because she doesn't write her own lyrics and, of all things, covers up her Australian accent (who gives a damn?), but even if the former is true I don't understand why that makes her public enemy #1. It's not like she's the only one.

Yeah, obviously I don't care enough about it to research, but I figured I'd ask what everyone else thinks. She doesn't write her own lyrics, huh? That's a pretty major offense when there are so many great lyricists out there getting no love. But a lot of the attacks I've heard have been realty petty and cheap. Welcome to the Internet I guess.

It's a headscratcher for sure. I have no idea if there's any substance behind the accusation that she doesn't write her own stuff either. Could just be the haters defaulting to their usual handful of insults.

I think the issue a lot of people take with her is the fake ghetto accent she uses and the whole "legitimacy" thing which is so important in hip-hop is seriously in question. Plus, the fact is her music absolutely SUCKS. I mean.. wow. Utter shit. Impossible to defend.
As for the girl herself, yeah there is WAY too much hate going on, and I don't really know why. Azaelia Banks will pick a fight with a plastic bag it it meant getting her name on blogs and websites (seriously, what a fucking one hit wonder, get off the internet and make another record worth a damn).
So, yeah. It's weird. Is the white girl rapping like a black girl thing rubbing people up the wrong way? Probably. It's the obnoxious music that probably doesn't help her out either, though.
(It's not harming her sales any. There's that).

I don't actually hate her music really, I mean, I've heard worse I suppose, but it's just so false I think. I don't know why, but I just don't believe the persona she's putting out about herself. It somehow, and I don't know how, just doesn't seem to ring true to me. Mind. I must admit, it's still a personality. Which makes it more interesting than Charlie XCX, even if XCX is by far the better singer. |
