Bring your checkbook along and leave your artistic integrity at home. I've never been that into Devin Townsend, either as a solo artist or with metal band Strapping Young Lad, but I've always respected his "take no shit" approach to, well, everything. Recently he decided to talk about his experience working on a song with the production team that handles artists like Nickelback (who would play on loop in my own personal Hell) and American Idol winners: www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/devin_townsend_wrote_a_song_with_nickelbacks_team_its_everything_i_dislike_about_music_f-cking_disgusting.htmlNow, I recognize that ultimate-guitar is a "news" site that usually only has a tiny bit more integrity than the tabloids in the checkout line, but this particular article is all Devin. "I have honesty Tourette's, man, and that's gonna cause me nothing but grief. But I tried it. With that whole scene, you pay to get a No. 1 song. This is how it works: these are the chords you can use in the summer, these are the chords you can use in the winter, here are the topics that sell... Oh my god, dude, it's a formula." The Fortress has discussed this sort of thing before, but it can't hurt to throw a friendly reminder around every once in awhile: that catchy single the kids like so much? Not only bought and paid to go number 1, but musically designed to appeal to morons.

SYL never really caught my attention musically, but I like this guy. I know it's all about corporate payola, but isn't that shit technically illegal? It's rare to have anybody break that code of silence.

I was thinking the same thing (rare for someone to mention it), but what could they even do to him? Townsend isn't the typical radio artist who has to fear being blacklisted. He's not going to release the single they created together because it's so vile he can't even stand it, so they can't hold that over his head either. But it is sad that he's probably one of the few people out there well known enough to be able to draw attention to something like this while simultaneously sticking to his guns.

Wait a minute... MAYBE IT'S ALL A CONSPIRATORIAL PLOT TO GET US TO BUY THE SONG.
