I know I had something really awesome for this week, but I'll be damned if I can remember what the hell it was so I guess I'm going to drop another classic country tune I was saving for next week this week instead. Another week, another pair of country legends. Willie Nelson is one of the most unique and recognizable voices of his generation or any other and CenCal's own Merle Haggard is a definitive singer/songwriter/instrumentalist and arguably the most influential country artist ever. It's as good a pairing as you can find. And hey, they're both still alive, whereas compatriots like Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings have long since passed on, so they've got that going for them. The song I'm going with is Pancho and Lefty, which was a cover, but a damn good one. It's an understated outlaw tale with a delicate melody that stands in direct contrast to the "hit you over the head" approach modern country uses in its attempts at storytelling. Nelson opens up the first two verses describing Pancho as a brazen ruffian who met his end in the desert and Lefty as a man on the run who its implied sold his previously-mentioned partner out to the law, presumably leading to his death. Haggard chimes in with a final verse suggesting a sympathetic outlook for both men. You don't really get songs like this anymore, at least in country. There's a poetry and an atmosphere to it that's just brilliant.

Man, I really need to start buying some country music. Great storytelling, nice, subdued music, authentic vocals.. very good indeed. I've heard of these guys, of course, but never any of their music. In fact, the only thing I've ever seen Willie Nelson in is Jessica Simpson's "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" video, notably only because they kept having to cut because he couldn't stop checking her out. Still fire where it counts, I see.

Pretty much anything from the 80's or earlier is probably gold in country. I'm pretty big on Waylon Jennings too. Best country voice ever. Actually, Nelson, Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson (the guy who originally wrote Me and Bobby McGee among others) had an awesome supergroup called The Highwaymen that I was thinking about using here, but opted to go with another classic duet instead to keep it simple. Great band if you're looking for great country albums featuring several classic artists. Haggerd wrote and recorded some of the best country songs ever, but he has some stinkers as well so beware of those if you're looking to buy any of his stuff.

Here's a question for you; what's your verdict on Dolly Parton?

Funny thing is, she's a household name and a country and multimedia legend and I can't seem to remember any of her songs besides the one Whitney Houston sang. I probably have to give her a thumbs up for a career that's lasted over half a century on basic principle, but I know precious little about her music.
