Kanye West: Super Douche

Part of me hates the fact I'm writing this thread, because it once again makes Kanye West the main talking point of an awards show where he was merely a guest. Kanye walking on stage and interrupting the awards is nothing new; he did it with Justice, he did it with Taylor Swift and now he did it with Beck.

If you've not seen it, Beck won the Grammy for Album of the Year, and as he walked up Kanye looked to invade the stage yet again.. but then didn't. Oh, how everyone LAUGHED. That Kanye. What a rascal.

Except he was serious, because how fucking DARE Beck accept the award for album of the year when Beyonce had one of the greatest albums of all time. Of all time! It's verging on self-parody at this point, but Kanye ain't laughing.

“Beck needs to respect artistry and he should have given his award to Beyoncé,” West said in an interview with E! after the ceremony. “At this point we tired of it because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats in music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.

“We aren’t playing with them anymore. And by the way, I got my wife, my daughter, and I got my clothing line, so I’m not going to do nothing that would put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight, but you all knew what it meant when ’Ye stepped on that stage.”


That word "artist" really is getting abused more than "ironic" and "literally" these days. I have no particular ill feeling towards Beyonce; she does what she does and she's very good at it. But surely an award for best album, to be an "artist", doesn't mean relying on literally dozens of different writers, producers and mixers to complete the finished product? I'm no music snob, and hey, if people like the Beyonce record then great, but to be SO worthy and pretentious and spoiled as to pout and insult other acts because they won and your friends wife didn't makes you sound like a complete tool.

I hate the Grammys, I hate that douche Kanye West, and I wish carnivorous moths on his clothing line and syphilis upon his wife. We can spare his daughter. For now.

But really, I don't hate KANYE. Like you, I hate that we, the collective public, spend our time talking about idiots like him for doing things that would get the rest of us arrested.

I watched the Grammys because my wife really wanted to watch it together and it actually wasn't that terrible. With one exception: Kanye fucking West. His performance was embarrassing. It was just him alone standing on a light in the dark autotuning some soppy mediocrity, not a dope rhyme to be heard. He also performed with Rihanna and Paul McCartney later and was like some random karaoke enthusiast had jumped onstage with them. TWO performances and not even one rapped line. I told my wife there are 7 billion people in the world and at least 6 billion of them are better singers than Kanye West. Why the hell are we listening to this guy sing at the Grammys? FUCK. Beck actually handled the thing like a total boss. When West turned around and left, he was calling for him to come back and join him onstage.

Speaking of artistry, picture this: Beyonce without her looks. Still interested in her music? I thought not. She's a beautiful woman with a slightly above-average voice who specializes in forgettable bubblegum repetitions masquerading as pop R&B. Take away her looks and she doesn't even have a music career. That is diminishing art. Beck has been paying dues since the 90's with hipsters singing his praises almost exclusively since his early two hit wonderdom and he's run the gamut of music from folk to rock to electronica to hip-hop to soul and made it seem effortless. If Beyonce can match that, maybe she'll have earned a Grammy for her music. Maybe. And even if that happened, it wouldn't matter because the entire Grammy organization is bullshit and its very existence diminishes the concept of music as art. Art doesn't need awards. Its value is exclusively tied to each individual it speaks to.

There is nobody in music stupider than Kanye West. Nobody. I'd suggest Trey Parker and Matt Stone announce that every time he speaks in public, they will make another South Park episode mocking him as incentive to try to get him to shut the fuck up since he's so butthurt about it, but if they had to deliver it'd just become the Kanye West Show. I've been on media blackout for about a month trying to get away from stupid shit on the internet, but I can't even watch a single show with my wife without seeing something depressingly moronic.
