There are few pop songs with as strange a beginning as Mark Ronson's monster hit "Uptown Funk." It debuted, sort of, in early December, when Simon Cowell had one of his X Factor people perform the song before the original was even released onto radio, a genuine first for any song. In a first for the X Factor, that live performance of a song no-one had heard up to that point shot straight to number one, meaning Mark Ronson had to rush-release his version by almost a month before people were sick of hearing it before it was even released. That too shot straight to number one, being momentarily replaced by the X Factor winner (see, told you it was a weird story) and then back to number one again for a total of eight weeks. People have heralded the success of this and the earlier Daft Punk "Get Lucky" track as a return to a more 70's inspired funk sound. Easy to see why, this and Get Lucky were two of the biggest cross-over hit singles in years, and they - gasp - featured real vocalists and real musicians as well. So what do you think of "Uptown Funk?" Do you think it's cut-and-paste copycat stuff, or a truly inspired piece of pop funk for a digital age? www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPf0YbXqDm0

Well... I don't hate it. That's about the best I can say for it.

I wasn't sure what to make of it first, but I could immediately hear the James Brown-esqe funk that Prince so masterfully adapted with his cohorts to make the Minneapolis Sound. Every time I hear it now, I think it's quite brilliant and the only thing that stops this from being greater is the fact that it is not The Time nor His Royal Badness performing it.

It's been done and done better, but a rehash of old good music is better than the rehashes of new terrible music radio usually goes with. And welcome back, Wolfie.
