It'd be more disappointing if I still tuned in to new Simpsons episodes, but the show has been on the downhill for awhile now. I'm just curious why they wouldn't pay the man since he is pretty vital to the show. Maybe he was asking for an insane figure.

Wow. After 26 years that is a crushing blow. It'll be interesting to see if they can recover.

Ben - it seems to be a combination of money and a stipulation in the new new two year contract the rest of the cast signed that prevents them from doing projects outside of the show. Shearer quoted that in the last two years he was on Broadway and wrote and starred in a UK sitcom, and that he didn't want that to change. So if Fox are smart they'll alter that contract.
By the way, I mixed up my voice actors. I thought he did the voice for Moe and Wiggum, he doesn't. But losing Skinner? Ned? Burns? Unthinkable.

It looks like Shearer may just be using social media to play hardball with no intention of actually leaving the show. www.ign.com/articles/2015/05/15/the-simpsons-producer-baffled-by-harry-shearer-situationIt's pretty much crazy to keep a VO artist from doing outside work since pretty much everyone in that industry takes multiple jobs and the producers say that there's no such prohibition on The Simpsons so there's something weird going on here.

I also read into it some more since I first posted. I saw one comment from an anonymous person involved with the show that Shearer was offered a pretty neat package that involved a healthy financial contract and the flexibility to record his parts via telephone from anywhere in the world (source was Yahoo, if I recall correctly). If that's true, it sure sounds like he's just being a dick.
