History lesson time. A few years back Trashcanman shared links to two new TV shows that were based on fairy tales in the real world. One being Grimm, one being "Once Upon a Time." I love that sort of thing, so invested time in both. "Grimm" was decent, but didn't hold our attention so was dropped after about three or four episodes.
Once Upon a Time was something Mrs C had no interest in, but I gave it an episode. Yeah, seemed pretty good, but I missed the next episode and.. you know how it is.
Fast forward a few years later and I noticed it was on Netflix. We decided to give it a go.. we powered through an entire 22 season in under 2 days. It. Is. Awesome.
It's a bit like the British series Merlin, in that it's family fantasy with nice but sometimes dodgy looking special effects but bags of charm and great characters. Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin at first seems like the kind of cheesy, OTT performance that would grate after thirty minutes but is carried with so much weight and empathy he becomes arguably the best character on the show.
It's no surprise that some of the team behind Lost are behind this show. Some of the recurring actors pop up again (Jim Dale, who has it in his contract that he must be the villain in every American TV show ever made) appears in both Lost and Once Upon a Time, and even drinks the same fictional brand of whiskey. It also has the same "character gets an episode to explore their dual story arcs whilst the current storyline goes on around them". It's a format that works so well with this show.
So yeah, colour me hooked and another reason why Netflix is king. Anyone else got a love for this show?
