Release a single. A few weeks later release the album. Tour to support the album. Do a bunch of interviews. Rinse and repeat.
That's the usual formula for most bands and artists, but occasionally bands do quirky, fun or just plain different things for the fans and for the music itself.
Examples from bands I like? Well..
Brooklyn based indie pop/rock group Bishop Allen decided to get their name out there in a less conventional way than the tried and tested method, by creating the "12 Months Project". A self released four track EP every month, ("January, February, March.."), consisting of three (great) new songs and a reworked version of a track from their album. The lead singer then created a side project called "52 Covers", where he released a free cover version MP3 every week.
To celebrate the launch of "The Magic Whip", their first new album in ten years, Blur also released a limited time ice cream, available only in one chain of local stores. Well, you have an album called "The Magic Whip", what else are you going to do? And when you peeled the lid off the tub, there's a code that gives you a free download of a brand new song. Ice cream was pretty damn nice as well.
This was something special, though. For the release of the God Help the Girl movie, Stuart Murdoch hosted a premiere at a concert hall, where he wanted to recreate the atmosphere of some outdoor movie festival. He had the entire floor carpeted in fake grass, urged people to bring their own picnics and lie in the "grass" with their shoes off to watch the film on the big screen. He came out and introduced the film, then brought out the cast at the end, then the screen rolled up and there was a joint God Help the Girl/Belle and Sebastian concert that was filmed and broadcast in cinema's all over the UK. My inner fanboy was squealing like a bitch.
So that's three of mine. What bands that you like have done cool, unique little things to shake up the formula?
