For a long time now Tom Cruise has pretty much been my favourite actor. I dunno why, I just dig the guy. I couldn't give a shit about his Scientology and what he gets up to off camera. He stars in good movies and he's good in them.
Did you know that all the crazy shit you see in the Mission Impossible movies (hanging from a mountain, off a plane, climbing up the tallest buildings in the world) he does legit? Obviously with wires and such, but he wants that authentic look. Got to give him props for that.
Anyway, myself and Mrs C are going through our own DVD collection, what's on Sky Movies and UK/US Netflix for our Cruise-athon, to watch every Tom Cruise movie we can.
There's a few gaps ("Legend" from 1985 comes on TV tomorrow) but we're now up to 2001 and Vanilla Sky, a movie I didn't care for much when I saw it 14 years ago. Loved it this time. Top Gun was a first time watch. It sucks.
I'd argue the MI series (particularly the fantastic "Ghost Protocol") are superior spy capers to any of the recent Bond outings, and when you want a box office movie Cruise is THE guy.
What do you think of him? And what's your favourite Cruise movie?

I think he's an overhyped midget, but he's been in some good ones. I'll go with Eyes Wide Shut as my favorite that I've seen. So much populist fluff in that filmography.

I've always been a big fan of Tom Cruise as well. He's underrated as an actor because everyone rags on him for his off-screen shit. I don't care about any of that stuff.
Vanilla Sky is outstanding, and even though I had big expectations I was still impressed by Edge of Tomorrow from last year. The M.I. movies get better with each installment, and while Oblivion didn't impress me the first time around, it's grown on me now that I've seen it a couple more times. Honestly, I don't think I could name a movie of his I hated. And every once in awhile he turns in a real gem of a performance. Magnolia, anyone?
My all-time favorite Cruise movie, though? The Last Samurai. Hands down.
