We go from Hot Hot Heat who really should have had more attention and acclaim, to someone who is finally getting some, damn it. Good reviews in the music press and even a Bafta, to be precise. Yup, TV and music. This guy can do it all.
It's not the first time this guy has been mentioned on here, but I'm pretty sure it's the first time his music has been put under the radar.
It's your friend and mine, Matt Berry.
There he is with his Bafta for the gloriously weird "Toast of London", a bonafide sitcom hit that's found a steady audience (three seasons and counting) where the likes of the sublime Darkplace sadly did not. It's even got t-shirts and a catchphrase and everything.
But we're obviously not here to talk about his TV work. When Matt Berry began making music it was always with his tongue firmly in cheek. Don't take it seriously, basically. Which was a bit of a mis-service, because even on the first record there were glimpses of genuine greatness in among the comedy. What would it be like if Matt actually got, well, real?
Now touring as "Matt Berry and the Maypoles", which I saw a few days ago, Berry shows off his considerable skills on stage (great on guitar and on some weird, swirling piano thing), he's funny, humble and clearly enjoying himself up there. The humour is still there, but on third album "Kill the Wolf" he ditches the silly voice and spoken word stories for some genuinely great songs. Rock, soul and even venturing into prog rock, Matt Berry is the real deal.
This is the lead single from that album. It's time to take your Medicine.
