That sounds like a pretty big, philophical question but I'm really talking about movies. Now, obviously when a movie is made the target goal is to take in more money than it cost to make it.
But going beyond that, what would you rather have? A movie like, say, the remake of the Wicker Man or, I dunno, the Mummy Returns?
The Wicker Man sucked and tanked. But it lives on, in a way. I just saw a discussion board where someone asked a question and the reply was a gif from that movie where Nicholas Cage is laughing hysterically. And there's a few moments from that film that have leaked into internet culture; the bee mask thing, punching the woman dressed as a bear. All ridiculous and terrible, but people remember it. And in a way, celebrate it. How many people have you seen talking or referencing the Mummy Returns? It did good money if not great reviews and then sunk away forever.
So what's really better?

That movie pretty much made Nicholas Cage's entire career a joke in one fell swoop, but I have to admit that I've gotten some serious laughs over the years from that ridiculous what the fuck were they thinking remake whereas I just shrug at anything pertaining to The Mummy. Better for us if they suck horribly, but better for them if we just forget, I suppose.
