Bit of a bittersweet entry this week, Dwellers. Sweet, in that a band I only recently got into have been catapulted into my Favourite list in record time, with their debut album getting repeated plays on my phone every single day, and the second and third album already ordered on Amazon.
The bitter part? I did a bit of reading up on them and they split up three years ago. Fuuuuck. They didn't split up for usual reasons, though; no "creative differences" or joining other bands or drugs or girls. The lead singer Davey MacManus moved to Africa to open a home for sick and abused children. Seriously.
You can imagine the record companies frustration with The Crimea. Their debut singles get a lot of hype, championed by legendary DJ John Peel.. and then they do things like release singles from the album with new b-sides, but put the b-sides for free for anyone who already has the album. Then their second album they release for free. They also recorded songs that could easily be played on the radio. Crunchy guitars, nice hooks..but then those songs are about drugs, spousal abuse and everything else that pretty much guarantee's no radio play.
Anyway, history lesson over. So a bummer that they no longer exist, but man, going by their first two albums (haven't heard the third yet), what a fucking legacy. Think Bends-era Radiohead or a less bombastic Muse and you'll be on the right path. I had a bunch of songs I could have picked, the album is THAT good, but here's an official promo video for "Baby Boom." (Not sure if the lead singer has a cleft palate, it would explain his slightly weird look and the fairly prominent lisp).
