Welp, the best holiday event is almost upon us, so I thought we could discuss horror sequels and ones that rivalled or bettered what came before it.
Not just "the sequel is better than the original", because that rarely happens, but when it comes to long running franchises that we're familiar with, is part IV better than III? You get the idea.
One rule here -remakes can't be put up against the original movies, although "the new Hills Have Eyes 2 is better than the new Hills Have Eyes One" is an acceptable (if incorrect) argument.
First up then, is the Return of the Living Dead series. I was never a particular fan of the original, that was too goofy to be scary and not funny enough to be a good comedy, it's one major win for me was the creepy moment Tarman was oozing around the basement. And the sequel was just shit.
The third movie, though? Well, it gave us this for starters..
And that opened up all kinds of new and strange feelings for me back in the day, let me tell you. But it was actually a solid movie; good story, decent acting, good effects. It remains fairly unknown and pretty damn under-rated, but I think this is a genuine horror gem, and easily the best in a pretty poor series (we won't even talk about what came after III).
When we're talking about Halloween, we need to talk about, well, Halloween. The first film is a classic, no doubt, and the sequel was certainly up there in terms of horror sequels, but the franchise soon fell apart after that, with goofy "illuminati" type bloodline sacrifice stories and previously unmentioned family members suddenly becoming a thing, never mind III which was a completely different story altogether.
H20, though, is when Halloween got its shit together.
I don't think if this rumour ever made it across the pond, but I remember before this film came out hearing that this Halloween was going to be set on a boat (y'know, H20), and I'm still kinda bummed we never got that. But what we did get though, was a back to basics Halloween movie, rejuvinated for a post Scream audience. Great script, Jamie Lee back on board, Myers being fucking BAD-ASS.. still great, and the second best in the series.
That's two from me, so what other horror films are better than what came before or after? Was the Third time a charm for Critters? Was Friday the 13th Part IV better than III?
Go.
