Yeah yeah, merry Christmas. We know.
So this was a first; on Christmas Eve I took a trip to the cinema, something I've never done before and after seeing families dragging fucking BABIES, seriously less than one year old babies, into a two and a half hour 3D movie (guess how that turned out), it's something I'll never be doing again.
Anyway, deep breath and trying to forget that, let's turn to the movie instead, and we might just forget the massive fucking downer that Carrie Fisher has died. Seriously, this year. Good lord.
Rogue One, then. For what it seemed to lack in actual characters, (the blind Jedi and the sassy giant robot aside), it more than made up for in action. More of a gritty war movie than anything else in the SW canon, the battle scenes were superb. The inclusion of Peter Cushing was a.. troubling one. Are we really going down this road now? I know he was an integral part of the story but still.. seeing a long dead actor CGI'd back to life was weird, and I'm still not sure how I feel about it.
Darth Vader's inclusion was short and sweet and, dare I say it, included to put in the trailer to get asses in seats (it's doing ridiculous money so it clearly worked). The main villain, I forget his name, white hair and cloak guy, was an effective bastard. I just wish the heroes were given more to do than look sad and mumble at each other.
It was never going to pack the feel good nostalgia punch of A Force Awakens, but for me this was a huge step in the right direction for the Star Wars franchise. It shows we're willing to embrace new characters and stories, even if the outcome was overly familiar. Let's see what else they've got.
