Everything that's wrong with hip-hop - in one song.
Sometimes it really does amaze me the absolute JUNK that gets released nowadays. I mean, there are things I don't like but I can understand the appeal (James Blunt, for one) but there are times when I have to sit back and just wonder a couple of things:
1. What does it say about our generation when "artists" are writing and recording music of such low and base appeal? When "artists" are basically regurgitating every money obsessed, bling-bling cliché ridden piece of drivel until the charts are clogged up with idiots saying THE SAME THINGS over and over again?
2. What does it say about our generation when people are actually buying and listening to this stuff?
It's actually too depressing to even think about. So let's turn our attentions to the cause of this wretched record - Jibbs. A name I'm SURE we'll still all be talking about in ten years time, (perhaps in the "did people actually BUY that?" category) and the song itself, a by the numbers "look what I'VE got" rap dirge from the bottom end of the boring, dead in the water hip-hop scene.
Amusingly, this song samples the old playground rhyme "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" (except now its "does your chain hang low?" - step back Stephen Hawkins - we have a new genius in our midst). Except "Do Your Ears Hang Low" is actually a crib on another song, that song being "ZipCoon" (not sure if Amazon will even allow me to write that - let's try and find out), an old Black Face song.
So - Jibbs is either promoting dated, offensive racism, or he's just really, really STUPID. Personally, I'd quite like to believe both.
One day, mark my words, people will look back at the way hip-hop has changed into the ugly, money-hungry monster it is today. One day people will LAUGH at this record. Not in a "oh, it's so funny" (it's not - it's humourless and dull), but in a "anyone who actually paid money to own that must have been a complete IDIOT."
Don't let it be you.
