Sigh. "The Mandela Effect."

If you've floated around the internet recently you may have heard of this "phenomenon" so I figured we'd address it here. If I sound like I don't want to be writing this, it's just I've spent at least half an hour reading and pointing out the various inaccuracies from several illiterate fucking imbeciles who think they've discovered "OMG THE MANDELA EFFECT."

If this term is new to you, I'll explain. The Mandela Effect is a "theory" that the various realities around us are crashing in on one another, and several alternate reality versions of things are syncing into our own, so that things we've remembered all our lives have now been changed or altered in small ways.

It was a term coined because of a "shared memory" of Nelson Mandela dying in the 1980's, instead of 2013, because apparently these fucking people don't read newspapers or watch television at all. He was seen with the Spice Girls in the 90's for Christs sake.

So that's the idea, and it's went on from a sort of "huh.., well, that is a bit weird" enjoyable enough read to absolute morons just being flat out wrong about shit and calling it a Mandela effect.

The most famous one I guess surrounds the Berenstain Bears. Now, if you saw that and thought, "wait a minute, it's not the Berenstain Bears, it's the BerenSTEIN Bears, congratulations, you're now up to speed with the Mandela Effect.

You know what? The only one that really threw me was C3P0's silver leg. That blew my mind. When did that happen?

So that one I'll give you, but even though the examples in that Buzzfeed list are OK, it's spurned on even more straw clutching examples that just grate my nerves. Some Youtube "celeb" had a video where she swore blind that the show was never called "The Flinstones", it was ALWAYS "the Flinstones." Because, yeah, that makes perfect fucking sense, despite the fact the whole name is a pun on Flint Stone, the same as every other name in the show (Rubble, Pebble, Bedrock..) Gaaaah.

There are logical explanations for most of these. I mean spelling discrepancies? Really? In twenty years, they'll be saying that they could swear "catch me outside" was spelled with a "sh" and call it an alternate reality. It's possible that Lucas altered 3P0's leg after the fact and hasn't allowed the original version to be released. The only one that got me was the Shazaam one, because I definitely remember seeing adverts for that movie. And no, I am not mistaking Sinbad for Shaq. I remember Shazaam and Kazaam both. Then again, I saw neither so maybe I remember wrong. That's possible, you know? And if one person can remember wrong, a whole lot of others can too.

That Queen one is baffling. It's.. right there, you dicks. Just listen to the song. If you want to know how watered down and desperate this whole thing is, that "Cash Me Outside" girl is part of the Mandela Effect as well, because there are videos and threads devoted to the fact that people SWEAR they remember seeing this video in about 2010. They're just saying that so they don't feel guilty about checking out a 14 year old.

The silver leg in Star Wars MUST be from an edit, though. Why wouldn't it be on any of the toys? How could we have missed that? But this guy is as dumbstruck as us and he's done the research too.

The "cash me ousside" thing is unsurprising because she is just one of an army of extremely similar "out of control" teenage girls have been paraded on afternoon talk shows since I was a teenager myself. I don't get how this one is so special. There was even a South Park episode about it fifteen years ago www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhqM2vLTr4s. I feel like I've seen dozens of her. As far as the silver leg goes, I dunno. Perhaps the scenes with 3PO were shot in a way that made it less noticeable? Next time I watch Episode IV I'll be looking for it for sure.

I listen to a lot of live rock albums and a ton of songs get things added and changed over the years. Yeah the original track fades out, but Freddy added the "of the world" line live because a fadeout works better on an album than it does on a stage, and that's how a lot of people remember it. Queen's live performances sounded better than a lot of their overproduced album tracks anyways. It's pretty shameful that this bullshit made its way onto such a huge site without anybody thinking to maybe check a few different versions of the song on Youtube before posting the story, though. If the internet didn't exist, maybe, but seriously, how hard is that?
