Aw yeah, we're back for another series of new music to possibly delight or possibly disgust. And the first week is an absolute no-brainer. I'd read about this album online on various meme pages on Facebook, and the reason it'd become a meme was because it was SO beloved and SO hyped that it was getting to ridiculous levels, hence the memes.
So I won't lie, I hadn't even heard any of this band when I bought the album a few weeks ago. And in those short few weeks this album is already dangerously close to breaking through the Top Ten of All Time barrier. It's THAT good.
It's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel.
If you haven't heard of the band, you might have seen the artwork doing the rounds online. But this isn't a new album, it's almost 20 years old and the band broke up shortly after recording it. But holy shit, what a swan-song.
It's dark and beautiful ("And your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking, And dad would dream of all the different ways to die, Each one a little more than he could dare to try" - how fucking bleak is that?) it's quiet acoustic moments, ear bleeding rock moments, strange, introverted lyrics.. it's 40 minutes of just glorious music, basically.
So as its the first week, I'm going to test your patience with TWO tracks off the album, because just the one doesn't really give you an idea of what it's like.
The first, the title track, and it's surely on some indie romantic comedy somewhere. I love it. (No real video, so please enjoy these images of, er, Anne Frank. For some reason).

You'd be forgiven for thinking the album would be all of this sort of thing, and that wouldn't be a bad thing either. But let's turn it up a notch with "The King of Carrot Flowers Part 2 & 3" (both one song, by the way).

Sometimes the hype is justified.
