So we had an all-time classic band with one of their lesser known songs, this week we're going to have a band that is, like, beyond famous, with arguably their most famous song..in a certain part of the world, anyway.
I'm not sure if this band made any kind of dent over the pond, but in Scotland at least, this band are famous. Like, you'd be struggling to find anyone over the age of 15 who didn't at least know this song. And you've got an English festival to thank for it.
The band in question are Travis.
So here's the story; Travis had recorded one album that didn't really do anything, but were on TV for their set on Glastonbury, and they performed "Why Does it Always Rain On Me", a track from their second album, and just as they began to sing.. it started to rain. Doesn't sound like much, but it became, like, a "moment" over here.
And that's all it took. The second album's singles all performed well and the album was one of the biggest of the year (if not THE biggest), and the follow up record did equally big business. And in a way, a lot of people soured on them. Not "edgy" or cool enough for the likes of NME, because now your mum was buying this album alongside everyone else.
Myself? I've been a fan for years, and their constant high quality singles, back when those things existed, gave me four or five new songs as B-sides each time, and some of their very best work was on those things. They may not be the coolest band in the world, but they were certainly the most dependable when it came to just straight forward good songs. AND after 9/11 they drove a bus around Glasgow with "PEACE THE FUCK OUT" written on it. Works for me.
This isn't my favourite song of theirs, but I'd be churlish to not play "Why Does it Always Rain On Me" but if you like this they have much, much more to offer.
