Hey, Curmudgeon! Where the hell have you been?!
Where have I been? I'll explain my absence in one word (or maybe it's two?) SUNSTROKE.
How can I go from the blazing, literally killer heat of Florida for 14 days and remain relatively unscathed, and then spend four hours in a park on the few hot days we have in Scotland and get absolutely annihilated by the sun? I look like the demon from Insidious, and I'm still not OK five days later. That ball of fire in the sky ain't nuttin' to fuck with.
Anyway, a video started doing the rounds a few weeks ago of a leaked audio of Britney Spears singing "Toxic" but without any studio aids or autotune or whatever. And it was, y'know, OK. It was fine. But people were sharing it, AMAZED that she could actually hold a note. Not that Toxic is some Mariah Carey glass-shattering vocal masterclass or anything, but, holy shit guys, this pop singer can actually sing a bit. LIKE AND SHARE.
And the comments. Jesus. Like she was John Lennon and Bowie rolled into one because she could actually sing OK. And hey, I'm a huge Britney fan, but I was like "wait.. so? So she can sing a bit? Is that supposed to be impressive?"
You ever see an episode of the Simpson's where a very young Marge Simpson has a Monkees lunchbox, and one of her little school friends says "ewww, you like the Monkees?! You KNOW they don't write their own songs?" And Marge tried to defend them, saying they did.
And remember the male duo Milli Vanilli and the front page SCANDAL of them being outed as miming on their own hit songs? They were finished after that.
Imagine those scenarios now. When did kids lower their standards so much that they're fucking stunned that a world famous pop singer can actually, like, sing? When the likes of Rihanna and Beyonce are almost at the point of worship and it's widely known and accepted they don't write or play any of their songs?
I get it, pop music is pop music. But when did standards slip SO much?
