When it comes to comic books, hands down my favourite ever character is Spider-Man. And not just Spidey himself, but the whole supporting cast of characters and his almost unrivalled rogues gallery of villains, often his comics were an absolute joy to read. So why was I just not pumped for another Spider-Man movie?
Maybe it's burnout. The third attempt at a Spider-Man movie in 10 years, the really not good at all Amazing Spider-Man movies and I was just like "... eh. OK." I'm happy to admit my lack of enthusiasm was wrong, because this Spidey is what we all needed.
(NON SPOILER)
Getting rid of the origin story was a masterstroke, because no-one needs to see that fucking spider bite Peter again. So jumping right into Peter being Spidey was absolutely the right way to go. And even though the poster became a bit of an unintentional source of amusement with the dominance of Iron Man, thankfully he doesn't take up the movie, it is primarily a Spider-Man movie set very much in the heart of the MCU. It's a fun, quirky ride of a movie, that really goes back to the early books and Peter's almost impossible job of juggling school and superhero life. It's been praised for it's diversity in its cast, and there are a few eye-opening casting decisions for the supporting characters. But it works, and the two stars are superb; Tom Holland is great as Spidey and Michael Keaton is an absolute bad-ass Vulture. Go see this.
Now, scroll down for SPOILERS.
So that's all the good stuff, but hey, it wouldn't be a comic book movie without some complaints, right? So, Spider-Man's suit, and the fact it talks to him. Not a fan of that at all, it felt sometimes like I was watching an Iron Man movie but starring a guy with less powers. He doesn't need any of that. Getting rid of the Spider-Sense is disappointing, because it'd have been fun to see where they went with it. I'm hoping to see more of the Scorpion (the guy from Better Call Saul is way too good, as is the Scorpion character) to waste on that little cameo. I would absolutely love a big screen adaptation of the classic Scorpion origin story where Jonah helps create him, but by the second movie they'll probably already be looking for bigger fish like Doc Ock or Goblin. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm hoping this movie lay the foundations for Scorpion as well as the Prowler, a pretty much unknown character but a welcome one, especially with Donald Glover playing him. I just wish they had embraced the comic book costumes a bit more; having the Shocker just be a guy with a big glove? Come on. The place is crawling with guys in costumes, give one of the bad guys an actual costume as well.
But that's pretty much the only criticisms, and they're pretty slight. What did you think?
