So myself and Mrs C were asked to be Godparent's to our friends daughter, which meant a trip down to Liverpool for the whole thing. Dunno about you, but when I hear the word "Liverpool", there's one band that instantly pop into my head.
That's right, renowned shit-tastic 80's one hit wonder group The Reynolds Girls. Oh, and the Beatles. Those guys too.
So we needed two days off to go down there and go to the Christening, but Mrs C booked us three nights down there instead, meaning we could do all kinds of Beatle related stuff on the first day before we had to try and not burst into flames as soon as we walked inside the church.
And so we booked ourselves into the Penny Lane hotel, obviously ON Penny Lane, right next to the barber shop and the bank mentioned in the song. The entire hotel was like a Beatles shrine, covered in photo's and artwork and vinyl. Easily the coolest hotel I've ever been in. We also did a two hour Magical Mystery Ride bus tour, visiting Strawberry Fields, the church where "Mother Mary" used to teach Paul, all four Beatle's childhood homes and finishing in the Cavern Club where they used to play, which is still a fucking cool place to go to. On our last day on the way home we did a bit of online research and went to a cemetery to see the grave of Eleanor Rigby. Just.. as good as I thought it'd be but actually better than I'd hoped.
But it got us thinking; why isn't there more stuff like this? There's obviously Graceland for Elvis but that's just his house. Why do the Rolling Stones not have some shrine devoted to them? Is there a tour in Seattle for Kurt Cobain? Does Minneapolis have some kind of Prince tour?
