I said this to Mrs C on the way to the cinema last night, when was the last horror movie EVENT? Like, one of those movies that everyone is talking about, not just horror fans? Blair Witch was one of them. Paranormal Activity, maybe?
Regardless, this new take on Stephen King's IT certainly is one of those movies. I can't remember a time where a horror movie has got so much build, and is up against so much beloved memories.. of a made for TV movie. Has that ever happened before?
So a couple of noticeable things about this new movie. The 60's are out, and the 80's are in. So instead of watching I Was a Teenage Werewolf and listening to classic rock and roll, the kids are in arcades playing video games and listening to cassette tapes on a ghetto blaster. And the adults don't get a look in with this movie, they're saving that for the sequel.
So there is a sense of us being here before; young kids up against a supernatural force, the parents are no use, the obligatory bike riding scene.. so far, so ET and Stranger Things. But the film's generous running time (it's pretty lengthy in horror movie terms) really gives us time to get to know the kids, there's no sense of rushing the story, everyone gets an even look. And they're great. Their dialogue is fun and pretty authentic, the casting of them is great (even though it really needs to be said that Beverley Marsh is worryingly sexualised in this, we get that all the kids are checking her out, but don't make US check her out too. You'll get what I mean when you see it, it's... weird)
But let's talk Pennywise. The film could sink with a shit clown and thankfully he is awesome. A drooling, giggling bucktoothed menace, all flailing limbs and mad eyes. He's going to give a lot of kids some sleepless nights.
So in short, it's a success. It's a scary movie that actually happens to be scary, the book is given its just desserts and, well, Mrs C has an IT tatoo and the 90's movie is her favourite movie ever and she loved this.
Definite h(IT) then.
