So here's something for you; here's a guy who'd starred in countless movies, of which I'd wager every member of this group has seen more than one. And of all the movies he's been in, at least.. well.. three are good. Maybe four. But with this one, it could well be his best. It's Jean-Claude Van Damme. Never in the same league as Arnold or Sly but still in more interesting fare than Seagal, it's still easy to overlook him as a product of a bygone era of cheesy 80's action movies. But we're not going to talk about those movies. We're going to talk about something far more recent, and it's arguably his best. It's easily the best acting he's ever done. It's JCVD. So Jean Claude plays an exaggerated version of himself here. And it's interesting that in the original script he played a fool, a cocky arrogant idiot, but they jettisoned that and instead made a far more effective character piece. So it's Jean Claude playing Jean Claude getting caught up in a post office robbery in his native Brussels, and we watch as the media loses their shit. It's sort of Curb Your Enthusiasm meets Dog Day Afternoon, but JC clearly realises the part he's been given and man does he deliver. Genuinely moving at times, he's down on his luck, broke and about to lose custody of his daughter. Can you name any other 80's action movies that deliver a one-take, six minute heartfelt monologue to the camera? Didn't think so. This one is well worth checking out.

Now here was a great damn film. My favorite was his little fantasy of spin kicking the robber to grand applause right before he flashes back to the reality of just him being another scared victim being held at bay by a gunman. That juxtaposition of the macho fantasy of martial artists having superpowers that JCVD embodies and the reality that martial arts are only really helpful in a fair fight that life is not indebted to give you in any way was just superb.
