It shows how established and confident the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that they can take the third installment of a franchise of what was one time considered a "difficult to translate" character - and make it a comedy. And it also shows just how skilled these particular people are that they actually, somehow, made it work.
Hiring offbeat New Zealand director Taika Waititi was a definite masterstroke, giving the film a quirky feel that hasn't really been seen in the MCU yet, not even in Guardians of the Galaxy. Waititi said he wanted Thor to be like Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China, and it's a little odd to see Thor cracking wise right at the start of the movie.
But you know what? It's a lot of fun. The Hulk gets more to do and say (particularly SAY, he's holding full conversations now), Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster is as effortlessly great as Jeff Goldblum usually is, the new additions to the franchise all work well.. it still feels like a Marvel movie, but one skewered with typical New Zealand humour.
Anyone else see this one?

I wasn't really feeling the trailers much. I mean, I want epic fantasy Thor battling the Midgard Serpent. How great would that be on the big screen? Three movies with no Enchantress is just awful too. No excuses. And with everyone clamoring for a Planet Hulk solo movie, what made them want to do a halfass version of it and fold it into a Thor comedy? And zero lines for Miek? Really? A lot of decisions to question here, but fuck it, I went to see it and had a really good time. Take out the out-of-place Flash Gordon synth score and spaceship chases an I'm on board. They did an absolutely shit job of explaining why Hulk was on Sakaar, though. "mumblemumbleQuinjet, grumblegrumblecrashportalwhatever..." Come on. You call that exposition? This is why we wanted a Plant Hulk movie. So that when he gets back all pissed off from being ditched and screwed over by the Marvel Universe bosses, we get World War Hulk. Those movies could have been amazing.
