So this week I'm looking at a movie that, amazingly, I'd never actually seen until a week ago. And it's odd because he's one of the most recognisable rubbery faces in Hollywood. Guys, girls, give it up for.. the Creature From the Black Lagoon! I've only got the original movie on DVD so haven't seen any of the sequels (I don't think there's that many though), but I thought this held up surprisingly well. Old Gill-Man isn't the most frightening beast out there, but I get the feeling he's not supposed to be. He's a fairly tragic figure, and I thought it was interesting that even back then, the guy setting out to kill him was the villain. The story holds up, the explanation of evolution was surprisingly in-depth, the girl was cute as hell and Gill-Man kicked some ass when he needed to. In fact, I'd say he's probably the most powerful of all of the Universal Monsters. Could it ever be remade, though? Would there ever be a time when Gill-Man could be frightening to modern audiences?

Absolutely. I would love to take a crack at reimagining this one. Open water is always scary wen done right and the scene with the girl swimming at the surface while the Gill-Man mirrors her is creepy and somehow romantic, but iconic regardless. There's a lot to work with here. I don't remember liking the sequels much though.
