The most depressing record of the year.
Calling this a "record" is actually a stretch - it certainly isn't "music", in any way shape or form. It's NOT pop music, it's NOT "fun" music. For you see, not only does this puerile, feeble CD show the grasping desperation of "Samanda" (that's Sam and Amanda to anyone with an I.Q) to keep in the limelight, not only does it show the boring, cynical record companies attempts to exploit the public - it's actually a damning, shameful example of what the female youth of today is being told is "successful."
Let me explain to those of you lucky enough not to know who those two deadeyes in the picture above are. They're two contestants from the UK version of Big Brother, who's entire focus (and, let's be honest, gimmick) was to be dumb, blonde, stupid, obsessed with the colour pink and every other yawn-inducing stereotype of girly girls popular culture has had to suffer for years.
Of course, not only did these girls turn out to be duller than the rest of the vapid, tabloid-appearance obsessed idiots in the house, they also almost won it, which goes to show the level of quality television Big Brother provided that year. As expected, the money machine began to roll before the morons who voted for them began to forget who they were, and so this wretched single was released.
It is, of course, a cover version of the famous Aqua song. But while the original was no classic, it was an actual satirical view on the exploitation of girls in the media. Hell, Mattel even attempted to sue Aqua over the song, angry that they tarnished the good reputation of the doll. I mean, even calling a piece of plastic a "dumb bimbo blonde" is offensive and degrading, right?
Oh, how times have changed.
NOW, you see, here come Sam and Amanda, (blissfully unaware of the song's real content) singing the exact same lyrics with a smiley face, being posed and toyed with by shameless record producers, more tacky and fake than Mattell's plastic princess. It would appear that girls are now HAPPY to be known as dumb bimbo blondes. Make them walk, make them talk, do whatever you please. Undress them anywhere. Well, "Samanda" don't seem to mind.
And this attitude is CELEBRATED: Paris Hilton. Jade Goody. "WAGS." Linsey Lohan. And now Sam and Amanda
The female role models and celebrities of the 00's, ladies and gentlemen.
