  .jpg)   .jpg)  Now, I'd like to think everyone in the Fortress of Solitude has a fair knowledge of video games. Not a "oh, the last graphic artist for Final Fantasy XXXXVVVIIII isn't a patch on the last one" or anything like that, but those seven names up there shouldn't be new to you. This is where we think outside of the box, people. From the seven (or eight, if you can think of someone else) who do you think is most easily recognisable to people who barely know what a joypad is. For a more recent generation, I would argue Lara Croft. Two shit movies (albeit with one awesome, awesome reason for watching) and all kinds of posters, calenders and girls dressing up as her for Halloween etc means that even people who've never played Tomb Raider know who she is. Other than that? Pacman is my choice. Been around since almost year one of video games, and surely anyone who sees a three quarter yellow circle thinks of the pill-popping ghost buster? On a side note, check out this fairly sinister promo picture for his arcade game..  Who exactly are we supposed to root for there? So, Pacman for me. But still.. who doesn't know where Mario, Sonic or the Space Invader came from? Cast your vote, state your reasons. |

Mario. Nintendo is The Juggernaut, bitch, and they always have been ever since this guy hit the scene. I'm not even talking about "Super Mario Bros.", that goofy Italian stereotype has been dominating since "Donkey Kong". About 10,000 sequels later, every Nintendo system's killer app is a Mario game and they are (almost) always revolutioniary. Throw in an unwatchable live-action/cartoon series, an even more unwatchable live-action movie, and an instantly recognizable voice ("It's-a me, a-Mario!") and you've got yourself a cultural icon. Master Chief would totally pwn his ass, though. That guy was arguably an icon after just one game and he ain't slowing down anytime soon. Okay so he's (Halo 3 spoiler! Read no further if you don't want to know!) floating around in space right now in cold storage, but he will be back; oh yes, he will be back.

Okay, maybe he's not quite reached worldwide icon status just yet, then. But like I said he's a newbie so give some time for the comics, novels, inevitable movies, and future "Halo" Olympic sport status to sink in. Come on, the Olympic symbol is even rings, man, RINGS, it will happen!
