Here's a great article on the 40-foot-tall King Kong robot which was featured in a grand total of approximately 15-20 seconds of footage in the 1976 King Kong remake. www.pulpanddagger.com/canuck/Kong_rob.htmlIt describes how, despite looking incredibly obvious and fake to us today, the PR machine for the Kong robot served to fool audiences as one of the most deceptive techniques in the history of special effects.

Hey, awesome, I've ALWAYS wanted to move a thread! Usually though, threads get moved by prickish "mods" because either the topic has nothing to do with the board its on or its been mentioned before. This was moved for a different reason. Any discussion on King Kong (even if it is the crap remake) needs to be put in the Movies thread, especially with the interesting article attached. Basically, this is no way a "Time Waster." Anyway, I have to admit to never having seen this remake, but I have heard of the robot Kong. You gotta love that advertising schtick though - the idea of a 40 foot robot Kong really DOES sell itself. Who wouldn't want to see that? Still, when it comes to a robot Kong, there really can be only one.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=dI9wPqk5Kgo

Good call and welcome back, Curmudgeon, I hadn't read this because I usually only peruse the "Time Wasters" section when I've time to waste which isn't often. I was completely unaware of this bit of classic cinema goofiness. I'm a big suitmation fan as all must know by now and I still think the original b&w Godzilla looks (mostly) awesome today. Rick Baker in a monkey suit.....not so much.
