You mentioned in your written review that Land would be in the top ten of zombie films, but really that's not THAT hard. I think Romero's series and (in my opinion) Return of the Living Dead III are the only serious contenders for nomination.
Unless I'm having an off day and can't think of any great ones. 28 Days Later doesn't count.
As I said in the comments on Amazon - really good review. I am really looking forward to this now.

Agreed. I've seen a lot of zombie films I loved (and I would qualify "28 Days Later" and the sequel) but there are a mere handful that match any of Romero's Holy 5. "Shaun" for sure, and "Dead Alive"/"Brain Dead" but after that their are few serious contenders. A LOT of serious horror fans are hating on this one so don't get TOO excited lest you join their ranks. I appreciate the comment; I'm going to need all the backup I can get. Thankfully, a lot of the people who didn't like it are my own Amazon friends so not too many flame wars should break out. I'm not sure if I'll be disappointed by that or not. Hope you enjoy the movie, C, It's getting lonely.

Another good review, there. I've been wanting to see this flick for a while but of course it didn't play anywhere near me either. I do dig this faux-documentary style of filmmaking. I liked The Blair Witch Project and I freaking loved Cloverfield, so as a fan of this uncommon style of film as well as a die-hard enthusiast of zombie movies and George Romero, this movie looks right up my alley. A couple of my friends watched it via internet download and they said it was awesome.
As far as great zombie movies go, neglect not last year's most delectable Planet Terror by Robert Rodriguez, his half of GRINDHOUSE.

Of course, [slaps own head] how could I forget PT! You are damn near the only person I know of who liked both BWP and CF. If you dig this -and I think you will- then that will be the trifecta. I swear sometimes I think people roll dice to decide which movies they do and don't like.

Being a fan of the original trilogy, I was disappointed with the lack of quality George Romero's newest film had. The characters weren't very engaging, or even interesting for that matter (Except for the deaf Amish commando, if only because the idea is just absurd). Also, most of the effects seemed to be CGI instead of the practical effects we're used to seeing in these films.

Welcome to the Fortress, Mac. And hey - we don't like bad movies, either.
I've still to see Diary of the Dead (I'm not sure if it's even been released over here yet, and it it has it must have gone straight to DVD, which is depressing). One of the things that has distanced Romero's films from other zombie junk has been the strong characters as opposed to the usual generic fluff you're just waiting to be eaten. So that's gonna be a tough call trying to get character development from a bunch of kids talking into cameras.
We shall see.

The main characters are fairly lame aside from the prof, but that honestly didn't bother me much as that makes it more fun to see them die horrible deaths. I seem to be one of the few fans of this film. It sucks. CG blood is NEVER a good idea, but it was integrated better here than in other movies so I didn't throw anything at my TV. At the end of the day political/social metaphor comes first for me, then zombies and violence, then black comedy, THEN characters when watching a Romero zombie film. 4 out of 5 with a particularly relevant 1st scores bigtime with this guy.

Sadly, Diary of the Dead WILL be straight to DVD in the UK. What a disappointment. I never had a chance to see Land in the cinema and I would love to see a Romero zombie film in the cinema.
Damn.
