OK, quick quiz to see where you are in YOUR life.. 1. The Last.. Album You Listened To: It's called "Heart Tuned To D.E.A.D by a band called Switches. It's rock music but with a pop heart - very catchy songs. Check the ace retro video.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRC10QVo8L82. The Last.. TV Show You Watched It was the first part of "Tin Man", a sci-fi take on the Wizard of Oz. I expected the worst, and Dorothy (sorry, "D.G") is pretty hateful, no surprise that she's the sister of the annoying chick from Bones, but it's actually pretty decent. There's obviously been money put into it, because, for its faults, it certainly looks very nice. 3. The Last Film You Watched Hmmm. I haven't seen any movies this entire week, actually. I think Blades of Glory, which a friend gave me to watch, and it was a lot better than I thought. Will Ferrel is quickly wearing out his welcome in my "what's funny" folder, but he was good in this. 4. The Last Argument You Had Believe it or not, I'm not really that much of an argumentative person. Not that I back down or take it up the ass from anyone (so to speak) but I don't go out of my way to start having rows with people. Plus I've been stuck indoors with a sore back for a few weeks, so that kinda limits it. The Wife(tm) then - obviously. 5. The Last Thing You Bought The single best chocolate bar in the world; it's a new one based on Cadbury's Creme Eggs - but in a BAR. I forget the name of it now actually, but it fucking RULED. I actually left the house to buy a newspaper and discovered it. Awesome. 6. The Last Website You Added To Your Favourites A bit of a mis-direction, but the site I poached Isis and Patsy from, because it's actually a bitch to find on Google. But its now been removed from my faves because I officially (with announcements and everything) at the start of the week. And that's the idea. Some obvious ones, but some random ones to try and get a better understanding of YOU. So, feel free to answer these questions, but I'm actually hoping you contribute your own "The Last..." questions, and we'll see how far this thread can run.

Album: Gogol Bordello- "Gypsy Punk Underdog World Strike" youtube.com/watch?v=jx-HvPXIuVsLOVE these guys. Just insane. Brilliant lyrics, too. TV Show- Season Finale of "Reaper". Look for it! Film: Halfway through "Seven Samurai". Nothing could be more classic. Argument: Wife deprived me of sex for watching "The Last Starfighter" instead of tending to her sore arm. Seriously. Don't ever doubt my geek cred. Bought: "Diary of the Dead" DVD. I just got my quarterly bonus and am contemplating a momentous Amazon spree, though. Website: I don't remember.

Jeez, where did that come from? You asked what was the last TV programme I watched and it just happened to be AI. Sorry to have wasted your time having to read the 11 words talking about it.
Sticking with it for one moment, I believe you said on another thread that there's nothing wrong with pop. But it's only as long as you like it too, is that it?

No no no no NO! As I've said countless times before, Patsy - in several reviews for example, POP music can be brilliant. Madonna is a POP star, Michael Jackson is a POP star. Justin Timberlake is a POP star. In their own ways, they've created some amazing, exciting pop music.
Some dead-eyed idiot who releases an album of songs written by someone else or, usually, an album of play-safe cover versions is NOT pop music. And the idea that this is now accepted as "pop music" is very, very depressing.

It's a "talent" show and it always produces talented singers (unlike this country, on the whole). I watch it because I enjoy singing myself and like to see what kind of judge I am. I pick a favourite and watch to see if he/she will win. This year he did and I'm really pleased. I'm pleased for anyone who achieves their dream, however short-lived that dream may be.
I'm not saying it's going to produce the next Madonna or Michael Jackson (please God). I have never and probably will never buy anything they ever produce. In the meantime, I will continue to watch it and will not apologise for it. It is a "pop" programme in the true sense of the word. It's popular and yes I am one of the millions of saps who looks forward to it every week and feels bereft when it finishes.
This is just one of the things that makes me the well-rounded, complicated human being you are beginning to know and love.

I dunno, anyone telling me they feel "bereft" when American Idol finishes kinda makes me feel anything BUT love.

I know. It's difficult, but stick with it.
Maybe "bereft" is too dramatic. Not like me at all, obviously.

Yeesh. You two. Curmudgeon, I reject the holy HELL out of the notion that JT is in the same league as Madonna and Michael Jackson in their prime. Just how is it that you think N Sync and their ilk came together? Auditions. Just like "Idol", just not televised. And Timberlake does not write his own songs, they are written for him by the same handful of uncreative retards that write every throwaway pop song that comes out and his albums are produced by the same uncreative retards that produce every throwaway pop album that comes out. If you're giving that beatboxing wigger praise, then watching "Idol" is the next logical step. Back away from the Sexyback, man; it's not worth it.

You misunderstand me, Trashy. I'm not saying Timberlake is up there with Madonna or MJ, but what I AM saying is he is a GREAT pop star. Since records were sold they were being written by some people and sung by better looking ones. Hell, how do you think Elvis got a job? Did Aretha Franklin write anything? Did Frank Sinatra? Hell no.
And I have no problem with (good) boy and girl groups, and although I didn't really rate N Sync (and they weren't a huge deal over here anyway), they were a REAL pop act. I mean, there has to be a bit of mystery and "magic" to music or it just doesn't work.
I never understand the appeal of these reality pop stars. For me, its like a magician coming out in jeans and a t-shirt at the start of his show and basically telling you every trick he's going to do and how it's done. And THEN coming out in a tuxedo and doing the tricks expecting you to "wow" at them.
I don't know how it works for American Idol, but on X-Factor the finalists all sing and record the same song. We see them rehearse for the video. We see them practise the dance moves. We even see the fucking CD getting pressed. And then, wait, we're supposed to BELIEVE the "emotion" in the singers face and voice?
Simon Cowell and co has destroyed the myth and illusion of pop music, something that I really think is SO important. He's turned pop stars into performing monkeys, and a whole new generation of kids will never have that "I wonder if he's singing that about.." feeling again.
That said - Patsy is one of the better viewers, in that she just watches the show and doesn't actually buy any of the music. That's.. a step up. For all that's wrong with the finished product, it is an entertaining show to watch.
