Sigh. Well.. you just know it couldn't live up to your expectations. You just know it's going to be another Godzilla. Another Phantom Menace. Another heartbreaking disappointment.
And then you find out you're absolutely wrong.
Indy IV, then. I had my major doubts (especially after Fortress regular Calum told me it was shit), but really, this managed to live up to the hype and the gargantuan expectation by being funny, exciting, touching and, basically, everything you expect from an Indiana Jones film.
First things first - Harrison Ford still cuts a dashing figure as Indy, and even though he receives more punches than in Mike Tyson's career, suffers falls that would break every bone in a 25 year olds body - dammit, you STILL BELIEVE.
The plot is likely to upset some fans and Cate Blanchett's villain isn't a patch on the likes of Belloc and Toht but these are minor quibbles. Shia Lebouf doesn't get too dwarfed in Ford's shadow and he pulls of the seemingly impossible; the NOT irritating side-kick role.
Controversial opinion time; this may well be the 3rd (and even, maybe, possibly, the 2nd) BEST Indiana Jones film in the series.
See it and judge for yourself.
*SPOILER WARNINGS AHEAD*
I expected numerous subtle and un-subtle references to the older films, but there is actually only a few that are very nicely done. It's clear this wasn't a film that wanted to rely on "aw, shucks" sentiment and nostalgia. There are a few touching mentions of Marcus being dead, but I felt they lingered on Henry Senior's photo for too long, even though Sean Connery isn't actually dead. But it was still a nice touch.
My wife insists the Arc of the Covenant could be seen during the warehouse scene (the box that was split open on the floor) but I wasn't sure. Anyone else see that?
I LOVED the end scene. When the hat rolled over the floor and it landed at Mutt's feet, I was thinking, "don't you fucking DARE put that on!" but Indy snatching it first, hinting that's he's not done just yet, was beautiful.
So the alien storyline then? A massive departure for the series, which has relied on more religious myths and beliefs than science fiction, will probably anger some fans. But then it is a historical myth in itself, that alien civilizations were responsible for the Pyramids etc, plus the mention of Roswell keeps it at least in the realms of "reality", so to speak. I was cool with it. Hell, it's always been fantasy anyway.
So that's my opinion - anyone else seen it?
