Yeah, I know - just what the music business really needs - another novelty covers album. So yes, a "singing dentist" covers pop songs in an "operatic style" - and got paid $1 million dollars by Sony to do it. So the album contains covers of famous Whitney Houston, Bryan Adams (really, you already know what those songs will be), David Bowie and David Essex songs. But ONE song, the song that got him the deal in the first place after execs heard it, was NOT allowed to be put on the album as the artist refused to allow him to release it. Guess who? Yeah, that's right - we're talking about you. Full article - prince.org/msg/7/279210/Prince-gums-up-the-Singing-Dentist-s-plansYou know, I often get frustrated at Prince's stance on the net. His fights with Youtube and fansites are depressing and pointless, but I'm totally behind him on this one. Back when he came off as an arrogant tool on American Idol (playing new songs from the new album, not talking to anyone and then leaving after he had played and offending Simon Cowell), this is one of those times where I'm glad Prince is a stubborn egomaniac. The sooner novelty shit like this singing dentist idiot is stamped out altogether the better. There must be different laws in different places; I always thought you didn't NEED to get the permission to cover songs, as long as you paid royalties?

American copyright laws are extensive and convoluted as hell. Good on Prince for stomping on this shit, but he soes need to lighten up on the fan and video sites and get with the new millenium.
