So The Dark Knight is now officially the second highest grossing film of all time. That will certainly please those at WB and DC Comics, after seeing Marvel eat up the majority of the comic book franchise pie with Iron Man and the Hulk both doing well, and immediate plans for Thor, Cap and Avengers movies. And that's without looking at Spidey 4 and that possible Venom spin-off (which would probably be horrible). But DC still only have ONE movie to crow about, and while it blew everything Marvel had out the water, there's still a potential for more DC characters to make it to the screen. And now it looks like the JLA movie has been canned ("it could be made now or 10 years from now".. yeah, thanks for that) where can they possibly go? The fact is - with movies like these, we hear about them pretty much as soon as they begin casting and shooting. And while the characters are there, from Wonder Woman to Green Lantern to another Superman movie - there are NO confirmed movies out there. So, realistically, you're talking two to three years before another movie with a DC character appears on the cinema. Here's a link to a conversation with the heads of WB, the people in charge of putting The Flash, Aquaman etc on the screen.. www.comicbookmovie.com/news/articles/4958.aspAnd so Marvel are going to continue steam-rolling ahead with a close-knit series of movies that aim to appeal to new and dedicated fans alike. How the hell did things get so bad at Warner Bros?

Joss Whedon was all set to write and direct "Wonder Woman" and they just up and pulled the plug for no good reason. No good reason other than only nerd "get" Whedon's unique sensibilities. Green Lantern could be killer, but they obviously want to stay out of the sci-fi business. Pansies. Aquaman? Yeah, how about a hefty NO! DC is going to have to happy eating Marvel's dust and relying on The Caped Crusader to be their cinematic breadwinner until they can commit to their own creations.

Here's an interesting article regarding the future of DC Comics which leads to one main point - pretend Superman Returns never happened. www.comicbookmovie.com/news/articles/4973.aspIt's still going to be a loooong time before we see any DC Comics movies in the cinema, and by that time, will audiences have become sick of the spandex set by then? In short - will a comic book movie ever see the kind of money the Dark Knight made?

Here's a relevant article. Turns out DC is going to try to follow Marvel's example. www.movieretriever.com/blog/editors/95/The-Future-of-DC-Comics-Superhero-Movies Then there's this: filmchatblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/warner-to-explore-supermans-dark-side.htmlSuperman's dark side? NOW we're talking. The Superman and Justice League animated series' did an incredible job with that. At one point, Supes considers taking Luthor out rather than allowing him to become president and we were treated to a "what if" scenario where the JLA meets future versions of themselves in an alternate world where Supes decided to do the deed. It was awesome. Supes used his heat vision to lobotomize supervillains Planet of the Apes-style and the superheroes eventually became these domineering Big Brother overlords. Then there was his violent hatred for Darkseid that made Batman look downright polite in comparison. There is definitely room for darkness in Superman's character.
