I realise that probably 3 or 4 people will take this quiz, and I realise that those people probably know more about Godzilla than I do, and so they will ace this quiz in about ten seconds flat. But what the hell.. have you got something better to do? overcaffeinated.net/comments/698I scored 10/10, and had to wonder at the guy who said he only got 2 right. What the hell was he doing on a Godzilla site then? As a side topic - who's your favourite Godzilla enemy? I guess mine would either be Mechagodzilla or King Ghidorah.. in fact, when I was about 13 or 14, there was something about Ghidorah that made me really HATE him. Like, I really wanted Godzilla to destroy him. I think it was maybe that horrible noise he makes, or the eerie way his heads would move that unsettled me. So, in a way, I would say Ghidorah ranks as the greatest villain. But I actually prefer Mechagodzilla just because he looks so damn amazing and cool. That slow pan-up shot in Terror of Mechagodzilla STILL gives me goose-bumps. And worst? Mothra. I can't stand that fucking thing. Oh no, save me from her terrible wings of doom!

Embarrassingly easy quiz. Best villain? So hard. Mogeira! PTTHTHTTHT! Worst giant robot ever. Best giant robot ever? Kiryu (aka MechaGodzilla 3), hands down. I've always been a big Rodan fan. Biollante was a joke. For every fiery death that Mothra dies, an angel gets its' wings. Alright. after all that stream-of-consciousness rambling I've got it! It's a tie between....
My favorite baller and my favorite monster: Nirvana in 30 seconds.
And then there's the spirit award:
Godzilla 1985: another VHS I singlehandedly wore out at my local video rental store. That was the opener. Simple yet sublime.

You know, that's the first time I've actually seen the full version of Bambi vs Godzilla. I'd only ever saw it on the net, but I'd never seen the "thank the city of Tokyo" bit. So that was on before a Godzilla movie? How cool.
Another thing I didn't know/forgot; that the different versions of Mechagodzilla actually had names. I don't remember that happening in the movies. So in Mechagodzilla and Terror of, did it have a name then?

Easy quiz, but cool stuff all the same. It reminds me of my childhood days of the late '90s, just getting into Godzilla and browsing Geocities sites across the web for any related content I could find. I loved stumbling across quizzes like this back then. My favorite Godzilla enemies? Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah, hands down, specifically the Showa incarnations of the characters. The way King Ghidorah's necks would always flail about maniacally as he set out to destroy everything in sight, coupled with his unforgettable cackle, lent the character an aura of insanity. And Mechagodzilla was the epitome of badass, from his imposing stance to the way he let loose with every bit of firepower he had. Even though he was always a robot being controlled by aliens, he always had a screen presence and a personality about him that made him memorable. He always felt like an actual character and not just a mindless remote-controlled tool (which is more than can be said for the 1993 MG). Imagine a movie from the Golden Age that pitted these incarnations of Mechagodzilla and King Ghidorah together against Godzilla. Would that have ruled or what? Biollante a joke, Trashy? Come on! She was one of the few monsters Godzilla ever faced to truly dwarf Godzilla in size, and her genesis along with her appearance are intersting to say the least. As for Mothra, I don't think there's anything wrong with the character herself, just what's been done with her over the years. Mothra in the 1960s was a brilliant creation, and the way she was handled in Mothra vs. Godzilla (along with everything else about that movie) was perfect. She was great in her handful of other appearances in the Showa era too, but that's where it ends. The Mothra of the Heisei era ( Godzilla vs. Mothra '92 plus her own horrendous trilogy) was beyond godawful. Plushy appearance, stiff animatronics, and a fighting style that consisted of nothing but terribly shoehorned beam attacks and flashing sparks. Mothra in the Millennium series has certainly been better in my book. GMK was solid all-around, and the special effects work used to bring Mothra to life in Tokyo SOS was nothing short of brilliant. And in Final Wars, she was barely in it, but what little there was of her was good. I think Mothra just needs a long, long rest from any future movies though, possibly forever. Her greatness really has been used up. How about favorite Godzilla allies? I love Rodan, but for me, there is no question: Anguirus all the way. I still remember the first time I watched Godzilla vs. Gigan on a Saturday afternoon at the age of nine, via a VHS tape rented from the local Video Express store. Watching Godzilla and Anguirus tag-team against Gigan and King Ghidorah was an unbelievably mesmerizing experience. Since first seeing that (plus Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla), Anguirus has always been the Robin to Godzilla's Batman in my eyes. Another thing I didn't know/forgot; that the different versions of Mechagodzilla actually had names. I don't remember that happening in the movies. So in Mechagodzilla and Terror of, did it have a name then? His name was Mechagodzilla in the '70s flicks and the '93 movie. Only in Godzilla x Mechagodzilla (2002) did they decide to make it "a Mechagodzilla named Kiryu", so to speak, which returned in Godzilla: Tokyo SOS a year later. The Mechagodzilla in those two movies was built around the skeleton of the 1954 Godzilla, whose soul later reactivated and repossessed its bones (and the Mechagodzilla around them) again. That made that Mechagodzilla actually alive, so the filmmakers decided that giving it a unique name added to is personality. Kiryu means "machine dragon".

Angilas is awesome-looking, but man does he get his ass handed to him badly and often. He's like the little kaiju that could. Biollante LOOKED imposing, but she was still a giant fucking rosebush and his appearing looking all badass out of nowhere only to die seconds later was just retarded. Good concept; very poorly handled.
Since you are the resident kaiju master, Haines, allow me to attempt to harm your brain with a supergeeky quiz question of my own. If you can answer this with no online assistance you will be the "Monster of Monsters".
When did Godzilla and Mothra battle Varan and Gezora?

Um... one of the multitude of NES/SNES/PS1 video games that Toho put out? I can't say I've ever been too knowledgeable about that realm.
Though there were those brief stock footage shots of Gezora and Varan (and Baragon, Gaira, Titanosaurus, and Megaguirus) at the beginning of Godzilla: Final Wars.

Not only does that game look horrific, it looks damn near impossible. That would be one of my crushing disappointments if I had bought that when I was younger. I can imagine how cool the box art looked, I can imagine running home with it in my sweating palms, imagining controlling a stomping, indestructible bad ass monster - and then to only start playing THAT abomination.
Yeah, it's gotta be Anguiras all the way. What was the film when Godzilla and Anguiras had a conversation? My friend and I used to imitate it all the time, especially the "Whaddya Yooo waaaant?" bit. Brilliant. No, wait - awful.
That pic of Mechagodzilla is EXACTLY the version I was talking about. I'm not sure, but is this version the MG that's used as the background for Cerebro?

Yeah, it's gotta be Anguiras all the way. What was the film when Godzilla and Anguiras had a conversation? My friend and I used to imitate it all the time, especially the "Whaddya Yooo waaaant?" bit. Brilliant. No, wait - awful. That was Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972). Fun Fact: The conversation bits between Godzilla and Anguirus are only verbal in the English-dubbed version. In the Japanese version, they just make that warped, tape-like sound when they gesture and are accompanied by word-bubble balloons appearing over their heads, like a comic book. Odd Fact: When Sony released their DVD of the film in North America in 2004, they used Toho's international print of the film instead of the Japanese print, like they did for most of their other Godzilla releases. What that means is that the print of the movie on the DVD is uncut and widescreen, with the original Japanese and English-dubbed audio, but the title cards and credits are all in English, as Toho made their international prints that way for the international market. Because the international prints were intended to be sold with the English-dubbed audio, the international print of Gigan had the word-bubble balloons removed (because the monster talk was expressed through the English dubbing). Since this is the print on Sony's DVD, if you watch the movie with the Japanese audio, you're left with no word-bubbles and no verbal English for Godzilla and Anguirus. I think Sony should have at least subtitled those scenes. That pic of Mechagodzilla is EXACTLY the version I was talking about. I'm not sure, but is this version the MG that's used as the background for Cerebro? Pretty much, yeah. The pic in the background of Cerebro is a publicity still for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), while the pic I posted is from Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975). MG's appearance was only slightly tweaked for Terror. His finger missiles were longer and spaded, the lower hatch of his chest plate was pointed on the bottom instead of flattened, and he had " MG2" hammered onto each arm, instead of just " MG".

Truth be told I loved the hell out of that crappy video game. I think you'll find a lot of 8-bit games you enjoyed are goddamn unplayable now that we've tasted of the Playstation and X-box. But how about the sequel? A turn-based strategy game! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godzilla_2:_War_of_the_MonstersThis was the first such game I'd ever played, but it was almost impossible to find (I rented, but never found a place actually SELLING it) and came out after (or close to) the advent of the SNES. Way underrated and ahead of it's time (these sorts of games are still popular among strategy gamers like myself), but boring as hell to watch. You want a truly colossal disappointment? Try the Game Boy Godzilla game. Prepare for laughter. You know that story the guy tells about the parents buying the game for their Godzilla fan kid and the kid hating it? That kid was me.
