I had heard of this a while ago, but didn't believe a word of it. But if Prince himself is talking about visitors homes, then it must be true. Gotta admit, if Prince showed up at MY door, I would probably be one of those screaming fans he was talking about. I would hide my bootlegs before I let him in though....
Prince is an odd fellow, he really is. He talked about how he had ditched the raunhier side of his material and that he didn't write explicit songs anymore. Yet check out the lyrics (the actual song I haven't heard yet) of his brand new track
you don't really know me you just think you do it's against the law in 13 states what i'm gonna do to you
oh baby you got to Turn Me Loose if you really love me you got to give me what i need or get your stuff and get cuz i'll just make you bleed
the board behind your head, about to split in two whatever's holding up this bed'll be here when I'm through
oh baby you got to Turn Me Loose if you like these blankets you better throw them on the floor the weather girl's a friend of mine, cuz when it rains it pours
oh baby you got to Turn Me Loose turn me loose now..
you don't understand, I don't do this nightly but if I get it once you'll want me to, more than likely
oh baby you got to Turn Me Loose i'm much too hard to handle, we could never be more than friends speaking of which you need to leap out of bed, and never come back again
oh baby you got to Turn Me Loose Renato, speak brother
It's hardly the Jonas Brothers, is it?

When I think of Prince, I usually hold him in a high regard for all the coolness he has blessed our ears with. When I think of how split he is between his raunchy side and his religious side these days (it's more drastic now with his religious side more on display) it just saddens the hell out of me. I read a few years back that one of the biggest reasons why Warner won't release control of his albums back to him was no longer the argument he had with them over his contract but mostly over the fact that he plans to edit certain songs or remove them completely. Now, while I agree something like RONNIE, TALK TO RUSSIA wasn't exactly as great a statement as it was intended to be it doesn't mean that it should be removed (or even replaced) from CONTROVERSY. Nor would I want him to edit one single word of GOD, even if he felt that he had made some inaccuracies within the song. They are a product of a place and time where he was, and we have seen him develop over the years into the mad genius he is today. Come on, Prince. Embrace the duality of your life into one like you used to:

I actually own that comic book.
Anyway, I'd never heard that rumour about Prince before, and while part of me believes it, another part calls bullhockey. I can't see Prince wanting to change his own songs, especially during the squabbles with Warner Bros, when his JW beliefs weren't really, er, "in full effect", as it were.
But you know what? I would be interested to see what he would do with the songs if he DID change them. A kind of "Prince Edit" album, not to be confused with the original release, even bundling it with the original (remastered, something I've always wanted) albums in a 2 disc set. I'd certainly buy it anyway.
