Star Wars - a NON bitch thread!

You know, we've had all kinds of negative thought on Star Wars since this board started, and its not hard to see why. George Lucas has seemingly went out of his way to ruin both the legacy and the memories of Star Wars, both in terms of the original movies and our love for the franchise.

So I think its only fair, life balance and everything, to forget Episodes I, II (and let's be honest, III), the Jar Jar's, Greedo shooting first, that stupid CGI movie that came out this year (boy, did that crash and burn) and, well, basically everything after 1983. Let's talk about OUR Star Wars, the REAL Star Wars, and indulge in talking about why the original trilogy changed the world.

Favourite movie first, then. And, you know, I imagine I'll get some abuse for this, but Jedi is probably... no, scratch that, DEFINITELY my favourite Star Wars movie. I just think it has the most exciting scenes, from the entire first quarter of the movie in Jabba's palace, right up to the Sarlac scene, the Speeder Bike chases, the Ewoks in general (loved them then, love them now. And they weren't TOO cutesy-poo.. they were going to roast Han and Luke ALIVE, for fucks sake). And then the last three battles, from Endor, space and with Luke and Vader and the Emperor - brilliant. So what's YOUR favourite?

Favourite characters: I was going to make it just singular fave, but that would leave out too many greats. Favourite character would have to be, of course - Han Solo. Adding a much needed cool to dorky Luke and wise old Ben, he got the best lines, got the girl (after pulling the quintessential “whaaaaa?” face at the end of Jedi) and damn near broke my heart when he got frozen in Empire. Most guys say they had a crush on Leia.. I think I had a bit of a crush on Han. But then, didn’t we all?

Special mention must go to Boba Fett. Has any bit character ever made such an impact with so little lines and screentime? Doubtful – but then, not all characters are as effortlessly cool and badass as Boba (and forget his pointless, loser dad Jango). Everything about Boba Fett just worked; the voice, the delivery (he’s no good to me dead!), the ship (Slave-1; awesome), and the fact he was so great they actually had to retcon his death in Jedi to “oh, yeah.. um, he’s not really dead. Dengar pulled him out. Yup.”

And of course there’s Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarkin (how did he get to boss Vader around like that anyway?), Jabba, the Rancor, the Hoth Monster, the Jawa’s, that fat robot that said "clomp"... too, too many.

Anyway, I could go on but I think I’ve said enough for now. So – the original trilogy of Star Wars – your thoughts, your memories, your favourite moments, your favourite movie, your favourite character..

Basically, to quote Database from the Simpsons.. “nyaaaaa… talk about Star Wars!!

et us not forget that Jango is the only man to defeat Obi-Wan (not counting his forfeit to Vader) in combat in canon SW. Kinobi flattened General Greivous (a more impressive feat if you've seen the original "Clone Wars"), Anakin Skywalker, Darth Maul (took a bit of luck), and many more single-handedly. Only Yoda, Sidious, and Windu were really at his level of success. Okay, no more prequel talk.

Your love for Jedi is not ill-founded, C. That movie is spectacular. The opening scenes blew my tiny mind with their still-unreachable levels of cool. Watching that Rancor on the big screen as a child probably ranks along with Godzilla as the most influential moment in determining what movies I've loved my whole life. It still looks unbelievable today. The only, ONLY complaint is the Ewoks, which weren't bad to me until they started crushing metal with wood. Stupid. I love Boba because he actually DID very little, but he just had this awesome outfit and a cool, menacing demeanor that kind of made him Han Solo's shadow reflection. Man, did he go out like a chump, though.

I'm going for the obvious answer and naming Empire as my favorite. It's just wall-to-wall perfect. That battle on Hoth is still my favorite Star Wars sequence ever. The effect that that sequence had on my young mind cannot be measured. If the Rancor is responsible for my love of monsters, then Hoth lit my epic sci-fi fire that still burns damn hot.

Tomorrow, I re-enter that galaxy far, far away one more time to catch up on the premiere of the new CG-animated series. Cross your fingers for me.

I've always heard of Robot Chicken and never seen any of it - that was awesome. Is it the same guys behind Family Guy? That came across as a lot more inspired than most of the crap that show peddles.

So - how's the animated SW, Trashy?

RC is one of the funniest things ever. I will give you a million bucks if you don't like it. It's practically made for you, C. Seth Green is a voice on Family Guy and a lot of his castmates pitch in with the voices along with many, many other great actors and actresses, but the FG connection ends there.

There's a lot of good if you can put it in a separate compartment from the OT. You would hate it.

The first two episodes of the tv show are way better than the movie, which was hardly fit for theatrical release. The first features Yoda battling an army of droids with the force while sitting crosslegged with his eyes shut. Awesome. The second was pretty cool as well, but light on action and I swear if Anakin's apprentice calls R2-D2 "R-Twoey" one more time I'm going to start throwing shit. Looks like every episode is going to be a self-contained story focusing on different cast members. Very cool. Let's hope it holds up because the premise and animation are killer.
