C-Rap.There's an annoying breed of "fan" that will write off new material from any artist with a certain amount of, er, miles on the clock, as "not as good as their old stuff." It happens with Bowie. It happens with Prince. It would probably happen with Michael Jackson if he ever actually recorded new songs instead of re-releasing the same 15 hits twice a year. And, so, inevitably it happens with Queen. But when your frontman, (possibly the greatest frontman ever), dies and you end up replacing him with Paul Rogers, a guy who sounds like he's summoning the ghost of a Freddie Mercury karaoke impersonator, when your own bass guitarist quits after seeing the soulless parody his band turned into, and especially when your musical output consists of horrific Queen-lite drivel like "C-Lebrity", then we can all safely say that Queen's old stuff is better. Even though their songs have been diluted by overexposure (at least in the UK; seems that any tv show or advert over here has the rights to Queen's back catalogue), it's easy to say that Queen were one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Full of pomp and posture, easily capturing the sheer PRESENCE of Mercury, their music was everything you could ever want from a rock band; both clever and willfully stupid, with songs you could bang your head or break your heart to - Queen were a one of a kind. Which makes "C-Lebrity" a fairly tragic addition to the Queen canon. A witless chunder aimed at reality show contestants (something I wouldn't normally mind) that sees Rogers try to shoe-horn some personality into the boring lyrics but ends up sounding like a pub singer that would have you finishing your pint and heading for the nearest exit. Normally bands try NOT to sound like themselves - here it seems the number one mission. Mission failed. The Curmudgeon has no problem with older bands and artists recording new material and not resting on old glories. But Queen's day has well and truly passed, and this humourless, depressing charade won't change anything. Note to May and Taylor; give it up and go away. QUEEN isn't the same without Freddie Mercury. Journey now has a Filipino Steve Perry soundalike, while INXS got a new front man thanks to a CBS "reality" show.
It's like "Chinese Democracy"--except now it's Axl Rose, his ego,and some session musicians. Smashing Pumpkins is now Billy Corgan and his ego.
Long live QUEEN! (back in the good ol' days)

I think Paul Rodger's voice is awesome. He should use it for something else. This is not Queen in any way, shape or form any more than Audiolave was RATM or Velvet Revolver was GNR. Stop trying to cash in on past success and move on you two fucking whores! Queen died with Mercury; end of story.

Yeah, I think his voice is cool too, but he doesn't suit these songs or this style. He just sounds like a Mercury wannabe, when in reality he could be much more than that.
On the subject of RATM, did you read about how they blew the festivals away here in the UK? If they decide to make a comeback (especially in these non-more turbulent political times) it could be something very special.

I hadn't heard, but I'm eagerly awaiting word of a full comeback tour. You did know Rodgers was in Bad Company, right? Great band. That is what he needs to be doing instead of this crap.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
NO BAND is the same without their original line-up. But what do you clown suppose Brian and Roger do? Sit on their bums and do NOTHING? They are...MUSICIANS!!!! You people need to get a clue. This is their FIRST album with a new singer. Sound, presence, band composition and gelling, experimentation and evolution all must take place OVER TIME. All of you dopes seem to want these guys to pen a NUMBER 1 album on their FIRST try. LET THE PROJECT EVOLVE. Between them, these guys have over 300 MILLION ALBUMS SOLD....so SOMEBODY likes them. YOU may not, but hell, GIVE THEM A CHANCE.
This album isn't half as bad as Hot Space. In fact, it's a grower. Its nice to hear something DIFFERENT...in DIFFERENT directions. It will NEVER be Queen as we knew it in their glory days, but the music they have made here is good on its own merits. Who was expecting the next Bohemian Rhapsody or Somebody To Love? Not me. I was expecting EXACTLY what we got...a bluesy sound on some songs, Queen harmonies, the Red Special...elements of their individual strengths and an album that reaches to different avenues. Open your mind people. Quit comparing it to Freddie-led Queen....he's GONE!!! Enjoy what we have TODAY...right here, right now.

No, I'd be reffering to anything that contains a needless "smile" at the end.

You don't like my "needless smile"? Its actually quite useful as a passive-aggressive substitute for "wow, you're amazingly pompous, self-important, and obviously in love with the sound of your own voice". The smile is so much faster :-)

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
The new album has grown on me quite well and frankly better than most of the post Night at the Opera ..."real" Queen CDs thank you very much. Paul Rodgers or Rogers as the apt named Curmudgeon refers to him...takes a back seat to nobody in frontman status and in fact was an idol to Freddie Mercury. I think they have done a great thing by putting Queen back out on tour...I saw them a couple years ago and loved the show..the folks sitting near me did as well and thought that hearing not only Queen but Rodgers hits from his days with FREE and Bad Company was like getting 2 or 3 bands for the price of one. The fact that they don't try to imitate themselves on their new album I find refreshing and as I said at the top...this album is well placed in my list of favorite Queen albums...and they do appropriately call the group Queen + Paul Rodgers. All in all I give them plenty of style points on all counts...

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
Bowie certainly did have a crap period, but I think he redeemed himself as the king of all music everywhere and anywhere at some point in the nineties#. I never really liked Queen. But in response to Robert Guerrero, I think he must realise that a band name is not a permanent thing. It seems to me that the right thing for the remaining members to have done would have been to work under a different name, and the only motive I can think of for not doing this is that it would probably mean less units shifted.
