If anyone can keep its heart beating, its Dan le Sac and Scroobius Pip. While Scroobius Pip isn't the greatest rapper in the world (sometimes his words do seem to trip over themselves), he brings back social and cultural commentary to rap, all with a keen wit and eye for humour. He raps about girls, knife culture and everything in between, a mile away from the bling obsessed morons recycling the same fucking thing again and again and again. Nice videos, too.. And this duo deserve so much more. Sigh.

That doesn't qualify as rap or hip-hop (not dead, just crap) in my book. That is just pure distilled indie-alternative spirit right there. Not my cup of tea musically, but outstanding lyrics.
I heard a rap song some time ago that kicked my ass. It wasn't on the radio, of course. Nas has been feuding with perennial biggest-asshole-on-the-planet award winner Bill O'Reilly (you may remember him from such abominations as his "all Europeans are cowards" rant) and wrote a song about his propaganda network Fox News. Awesome.
