OK, OK.. I admit it - this looks pretty good. Still not big on Kirk, but Spock looks cool, the ship looks cool and, well, Simon Pegg's in it (not sure about him as Scotty though, time well tell). www.comicbookmovie.com/star_trek/videos/?v=53I've never been a huge Star Trek fan, to be honest, so I'm not exactly rabid about this movie like I would be with, say, news of a Sub Mariner movie, but it certainly could be the shot in the arm the franchise needs. Thoughts?

Hate is spewing forth from others, but I'm reserving my remake venom for now. Trek is one franchise that I think needs a fresh start badly. With all the continuity and time travel and spin-offs and lore and mythology built up around the franchise, I don't think ANYBODY could make a good show or film out of it anymore. Too restricting. I was done after TNG. I've heard this one is still canon Trek so I'm not planning on seeing it at this time unless it get some rave reviews. They should have gone the reboot route. Then I'd be into it.

See, THAT is a problem. If it is canon there's a whole universe of stuff already canon (books etc) showing the early days of Trek that will no doubt get completely ignored. Doesn't bother me, I don't read any of it, but it'll still upset the fanboys and, really, they're the main target aren't they?

In the end, fanboys ALWAYS save these horrible reboots. I love ST:TOS and I love the films (up until GENERATIONS...then it gets on shaky ground). I personally HATE J.J. Abrams being the "mastermind" behind this. I HATED his M:I III so much it lead to this review: forums.dvd-swaps.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9964Not only that, but I was SEVERELY disappointed by CLOVERFIELD. If I had wanted to see ROMEO AND JULIET: EMO VERSION with a dash of monster coolness, I would've just watched ROMEO AND JULIET until I fell asleep (hint: it wouldn't take long) and then play the trailer for THEM! once I woke up. I'm sick and tired of Teenage Angst films by guys my age and older....HIGH SCHOOL SUCKED!!! WE KNOW IT ALREADY!!!! I'm tired of seeing your 7th grader daydreams about hot chicks and asshole jock types that beat up the guy you wish you were who later has the biggest guns and even bigger explosions in his fast ride that'll get him some slippery slopin' later on that are about as interesting as nail polish drying on the nail polish brush.... I don't want BIGGER!!!! I DON'T WANT FASTER!!!! I just want to watch something I can recognize beyond 3 basic shirt colors. Christ, here's a hint for all you Hollywood suits out there who promote this "remake-reboot-remaquel" shit that reeks of emo teen angst:

You don't rant often Wolfman, but when you do it's always a doozy.
Gotta disagree on two counts, though - 1. I loved, loved, LOVED Cloverfield. And 2. JJ is a faaaar better choice than some we could mention. Would you want Michael Bay getting his hands on it?
If you ask me, nerds are the future. Saying you don't want guys your age directing these movies is a bit of a reach when talking about JJ - he's 42, guy - haven't you just turned 30? And another guy the same age (and of similar dorkiness) made Iron Man - the second best comic book movie of the year.
I dunno.. I have mixed feelings about this film, but no ill-feeling towards the director choice. He worked wonders in Lost, Alias was supposed to be good (never seen it) and Fringe is shaping up to be pretty damn cool. So... we'll see.
