Apologies if this is old news to anyone in the US, but "Icky Thump" still isn't out yet. For me, the last White Stripes record was a major mis-fire. I found it frustrating at best and just damn boring at worst. But if this surreal, bad-ass tune is anything to go by, then the album of the same name is going to be something else. For those who haven't heard it, or those wanting to hear it again.. www.myspace.com/thewhitestripesYou know, for a band who pride themselves on a "retro" sound, they've made some of the most innovative and distinct rock music in the last ten years. Long may it continue.

I've really never liked the White Stripes, and to tell the truth I despise the new single. It's been flooding the radio stations for a few weeks already here in the U.S., and I just can't believe how ANNOYING it is. Jack's vocals, the squeaky repetitive solos, and that God-awful main riff just drive me NUTS.

Yes, yes, YES. You see what that last post was, ladies and gentlemen? THAT, was an OPINION. So many times I've visited discussion boards and been met with.. Ok Me too ;D Cool Etc. Etc. Etc. It would be SO easy for people on this site to give the smiley answer, the "yeah, OK " bullshit answer, but that would be an INSULT to me, this site and the person posting. Man, I've been on so many sites pimping the Fortress over the last few weeks you've no idea how good it is to see a 100% DIFFERENT view than the original post. Anyway... Ben, I LOVE the fact its "flooding radio stations" because that is so not the case in the UK its almost funny. I loved the song as soon as I heard it but, like some of the best songs, its either love it or hate it, I guess. I know a lot of people who haven't bought into the White Stripes since they debuted, and I imagine this single won't win over any new fans. It has, somewhat ironically, won me BACK from the last record. Go figure.

I'm not huge on the White Stripes, but I do respect their music. It's hard for me to get into a band that's on every magazine cover and on every radio station all the damn time because music is such a personal thing to me. But I really like the the fact that they're just two people with very little musical talent in the traditional sense (Meg is the worst drummer this side of Lars Ulrich) just going out there and laying it down. No matter how big they get, that will always make those guys punk rock in my book.

I went to see The Raconteurs last year (Jacks, er, "spin-off" band), and their was an awesome Spinal-Tap moment when he said he'd been all around the world but the best place in the WORLD was right here... and then said the wrong place.
Regarding the White Stripes, in America was there some big hush-hush deal about them being brother and sister? When they first broke the UK, every music mag was enthralled with their relationship, whether they were friends, lovers, related... when I saw them a couple of years ago, he introduced Meg as his sister, even though they were once married. Weird.
