There was a song (from a time too far away for me to be comfortable with) from Bis, an ace indie band (an ACTUAL indie band, not just "oh, they play guitars? That's INDIE music") and it really did sum up the collector's attitude that lives in us all when it comes to DVDs and CDs (this was written when almost every single was released in a 2 disc set)
This is limited edition
On icky-coloured vinyl in a poster pack
This is limited edition
Get more information send the postcard back
This is limited edition
To get the extra songs buy the 2 cd's
This is limited edition
And collector fever is killing me
This is funded by a major
But shabbily packaged to pretend that it's cool
This is a fake indie label
Release the records you want but you're under our rule
This is limited edition
With a nice little sticker and a personal number
This is limited edition
How they sell it so cheap it's no longer a wonder
Anyway, are we still gripped by a love of limited edition packaging? I find that, nowadays, with ebay and the net in general, "limited edition" is pretty much a thing of the past. In days of yore, when certain CDs came out in a tin or with a poster or whatever, if you didn't get it in the first few weeks that was pretty much it, and you had to scour second hand stores trying to pick it up. Nowadays, one click and its yours.
Saying that, I suppose I am still a sucker for it, and it usually means I miss out on buying stuff I want in its regular packaging because I'm holding out for the pricier, deluxe version. Example? The Planet Of the Apes boxset was in a store for about £10, but I didn't buy it because I'm kidding myself that I'll actually buy that awesome looking Ape Head thing one day.
That's not to say I'll buy any old shit just 'cos it's got a nice box, but if I'm a fan I'll try my best to hunt down the Special/Deluxe/Collectors/Ultimate/Some Other Impressive Word/ edition.
What about you? Do you fall under the spell of the nice box, or is it, ahem, "what's inside that counts?"
