Now, I know this isn't the sort of film we normally talk about in the Fortress of Solitude. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it's not.
But nevertheless, The Curmudgeon received free preview screening tickets to this film (it's not released to the other, lesser, inhabitants of the UK until February 6th).
I actually had zero idea of what the film was about, but Brad Pitt has starred in relatively few bad movies (OK, there was Mr and Mrs Smith, but hell, he bagged Angelina - for real - in that movie) so I was already sold. And OK, there's nothing (save the fantasy element of a man living his life backwards, being born old and growing younger) that normally makes a Curmudgeon movie; no super powers, no monsters, no ghosts or demons and no nudity) but it was a genuine surprise. No, scratch that, it's not just a suprise, it wasn't just half decent or watchable - it's a GREAT movie.
The acting (especially by Pitt, so often overlooked and unappreciated as just some pretty boy actor) is first rate, while the story itself had every woman in the audience (including Mrs C) snuffling and weeping into their Kleenex. A moving, gripping, heartfelt story, with some nice side touches in humour (the guy who gets "struck by lightning seven times" for example) and the fact it suitably removes itself from any undeserving Chick Flick connotations (this is so much more than that).
The Curmudgeon never cares for Oscars, but this film received, like, 12 nominations. After seeing it, you will concur.
You want to score kudos points with your lady, faithful Dwellers? Take them to this movie. And you'll love it too.

I was going to skip it, but now it's up to "catch it on DVD status" thanks to your glowing appraisal.

Yeah, I wouldn't urge anyone HERE to rush out and go to the cinema, but a DVD rent is well worth your time.
Maybe I'm just getting sentimental...

I thought it was great, but I don't expect anything less from director David Fincher.

I had no idea who the director was until I sat down to watch it. After that, watching a film from the same guy who made Fight Club and Seven? Not a chore.
Glad you liked it too, Ben. I wasn't sure, after I had posted my glowing comments, that maybe I was going "soft." But the more I think about it the more I actually enjoyed it. I'll be picking it up on DVD for sure.
