Part of me wanted to like this. Too bad. Here's an answer to a difficult question; what do you do if you're Chris Cornell and your band loses steam and focus? You split Soundgarden up and form Audioslave. Now, what do you do when THAT band loses steam and focus? The answer, sadly for Chris, seems to be "get Timbaland involved." Let's get this out of the way first of all; I'm not some musty rock "puritan" who thinks rock stars should only play rock music and that rock music should only be played with guitars by guys with long hair and sleeveless t-shirts. Bands like Hadouken! and the Prodigy have shown that rock music is a progressive beast, that dance beats and guitars make pretty excellent bedfellows. So surely teaming the most successful producer in the world with the wall-crumbling vocal power of Cornell would create The Next Big Thing..? Well, for starters, it's ironic that this song is called "Part Of Me", when its hard to find any part of Chris Cornell in it at all. Yeah, Timbaland's trademark squelches and throbbing bass are all present and correct, but really, this could be ANYONE singing here, and when you consider the voice that is actually singing it's a damn shame. I'm not saying he has to bellow like a bull on every song, but a hint of passion surely isn't too much to ask? Cornell doesn't convince, not once, on this (really quite misogynistic) track, and even though he doesn't dance in the video, he still looks embarrassed to even be there. And really, who can blame him? All credit to the guy for trying, but with a tune this limp the whole project is dead in the water from day one. So yes, rock and hip-hop, rock and dance, rock and pop - anything goes, but sometimes even the most expensive beats can't save you. Just reform Soundgarden, Chris. You know you want to. I fuckin' HATE this song! HATE IT! There's so many problems, you never feel like you're accomplishing anything by listening to this song. Except, of course, the growing feeling of the DEATH of Chris Cornell's career creeping up on you...

Chris Cornell has pissed me off to no end in the past 5 years. The last round of Audioslave singles was TERRIBLE, and his solo shit is much worse.
You know you're pathetic when the best thing you've done in close to a decade is (wait for it) collaborate with Linkin Park to do some killer live duets.
Has he quit smoking yet, or is he still killing his vocal chords?

Yeah, stick a fork in the man. I've never heard a Timbaland track that wasn't generic recycled uncreative SHIT and throwing a famous rock singer in the mix isn't going to change bad music into good. Maybe some day people will stop praising moronic untalented producers and actually start paying attention to actual musicians again.

I don't know if Cornell's done, but I think it's safe that he badly needs to re-examine his career. Whatever happened to the genius who did "Spoon Man", "Outshined" and "Jesus Christ Pose"?

Another talented musician blinded by greed and ready to sell his soul to regain a sliver of his past success. It's been awhile since he released something that wasn't fueled solely by the financial aspects, it seems. So fucking sad. It's not just him though. That seems to be the norm in the music biz.

True. Still, there are a few glimmering rays of hope. I just wish more bands had the conviction of, say, Fugazu. Why can't these new so-called punk bands sell concert tickets and CDs for under $10. Do I look like I want to pay upwards of $20 an album?

Because they want fame and would rather sign their lives away to a major label for a shot at big-budget production, advertising, corporate payolla, and the fame that might follow then retain their integrity, get off their ass and do it themselves, and settle for doing what they love more a decent living. Fugazi don't merchandise, play many of their shows for free, never charged more then ten bucks for a ticket, created their own record label, avoid the mainstream media like the plague, handle their own business, sell albums at their shows for 5 or six dollars, and they've never had money issues. And the asshole fans they threw out of their shows even got refunds on the spot. The absolute perfect band.

Don't know if I'd say the absolute perfect band, but their anti-corporate mindset definitely earns major respect from me. I wish Rage Against the Machine had gone that route. Same with Faith No More.

ORIGINAL COMMENT FROM AMAZON.COM
This makes me so sad. I was devastated when Cornell formed Audioslave, and I felt alone. It's good to see I wasn't the only one who was up in arms over the fact that Cornell, a talented man who was once a member of a very talented band, decided to join forces with these talentless scrubs who thought 2.5 chords ad infinitum was enough for a song.

Talentless scrubs? Listen to this song and then tell me whose got no talent. Then find me one guitarist who can pull of what Morello does routinely with his solos and the we can talk without me laughing loudly at your complete lack of musical knowledge. I'm waiting....

Calm down trashcanman. The talentless scrub comment had to have been in reference to Timbaland and his cronies. No way he was talking about Morello.

Well, open minded alert; Timbaland may be a lot of things, but a "talentless scrub" he ain't.

He said he was devastated when Cornell joined Audioslave and then followed it up with the talentless scrubs crack so it's an easy mix-up, Mackshere. I'm pretty sure if you looked up "talentless scrub" in the dictionary it would at least mention Timbaland in passing, C. If he had talent, the music wouldn't be so awful and redundant. Open-minded doesn't mean you have to love absolutely everything. You know that better the most. Feel free to show me something he did HIMSELF that blows my mind and prove me wrong.

Oh come on, Trash - I'm no fan of the guy but check out his credentials on Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timbaland_discography#As_songwriter22nd most succesful songwriter in the UK? Written on undeniable hits like Cry Me a River, Sexyback, Promiscious (to name but a few). Not to mention being responsible for producing Missy Elliots best work, (back when she wasn't terrible) and Jay Z to name but a few of the hundreds. And that's without talking about record sales. I hate a lot of things and a lot of people but Timbabland doesn't even register. Except, er, on this song.
